Warning! This article covers the events of the April 17th episode of “Doctor Odyssey,” titled “Crew Week.” If you haven’t watched it yet, you can find it on Hulu with your subscription.
In just three more episodes, the season finale of “Doctor Odyssey” is set to air on the 2025 TV schedule, and ABC hasn’t confirmed if this Ryan Murphy medical drama will return for a second season. This could mean that the show is considering different scenarios for its key characters, which might see them leaving the ship permanently. Time will tell how things unfold, but I have some definite opinions on what Avery should decide to do.
During “Crew Week,” The Odyssey’s staff spent a week without passengers. For Max (Joshua Jackson), this meant traveling to meet his 1-minute-older twin brother, who was also portrayed by Joshua Jackson, and his family. Additionally, Max had a job interview lined up, which, if successful, could provide him with a post-“Doctor Odyssey” career plan.
During Max’s absence, it was Avery (Phillipa Soo) who took over all medical matters. After discovering that she wasn’t carrying Max or Tristan’s baby, Avery decided to resume her previous plan and depart within a few weeks for medical school. While I don’t believe this would be beneficial for the show (or my expectations for Doctor Odyssey Season 2), I firmly believe she should follow through with this decision based on this episode’s events.
In numerous instances, Avery has demonstrated intelligence and competence, yet during “Crew Week,” even those who are familiar with her questioned her medical judgments. Regardless of the fact that she was in command and successfully saved Rosie’s foot and Spencer’s life, this episode underscored the reality that the Odyssey crew primarily views Avery as a romantic interest rather than recognizing her as a fully respected individual.
This season, Avery has found herself in a romantic predicament: both Max and Tristan (Sean Teale) have shown interest. Since she works with them in the medical bay, it’s a 100% office romance scenario! In this episode, we discovered that she also had a past relationship with Spencer (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell). Spencer appeared keen on rekindling things, but before parasites affected his nervous system, Max and Tristan both seemed unfazed, expressing their love for her. It’s as if Avery can’t even do an MRI in peace!
It’s clear now that Tristan was involved with Laura Harrier’s character, Vivian, which isn’t surprising given the trend of “V” names following Veronica, Victoria, and Vanessa in “Spring Break.” However, it appears that Vivian’s presence served primarily to help Tristan understand his true feelings for Avery, rather than indicating a deeper connection between them.
Vivian and Avery both deserve better.
It seems like Avery and Max’s potential careers in medical school or at Mike O’Malley’s hospital might be their future paths if Season 2 doesn’t materialize. However, I don’t want either of these characters to choose those routes. If Avery decides to remain on that boat, I hope she begins to receive the recognition and respect she deserves.
On ABC, the series Doctor Odyssey airs again at 9 p.m. Eastern Time this coming Thursday, May 1st. Only three more episodes remain until the season concludes.
