The newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday suggests the Marvel Cinematic Universe might be utilizing a popular X-Men character effectively for the first time.
Marvel is currently finishing up work on Avengers: Doomsday, directed by Joe and Anthony Russo. It’s scheduled to hit US theaters later this year, and a follow-up movie, Avengers: Secret Wars, is planned for 2027.
Marvel has now released three short teasers for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday movie. The first trailer confirmed Chris Evans will reprise his role as Steve Rogers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and the second highlighted Chris Hemsworth’s Thor. Fans can expect a fourth teaser to drop next week.
What do we see in the Avengers: Doomsday teaser trailer?
The newest trailer for Avengers: Doomsday finally shows the X-Men, giving fans their first glimpse of Patrick Stewart as Professor X and Ian McKellen as Magneto returning to their roles.
The teaser concludes with a quick look at James Marsden as Scott Summers, also known as Cyclops. He’s wearing a suit that closely resembles the one from the comics, and a short scene of him using his optic blast suggests this might be his strongest performance as the character yet.
As a huge cinema fan, I’m still left with so many questions after the teaser! Why is Cyclops so furious? What is that massive figure looming behind him? And will the X-Men’s world be completely wiped out in this Avengers: Doomsday event? We’ll have to wait until December to find out, I guess. But what really struck me is how they seem to be handling Cyclops differently this time. While Alan Cumming was great in the original X-Men films, they never really let him shine as the character truly is in the comics. It always felt like he was stuck in that Jean-Wolverine love triangle, and we never got to see much beyond that. Then, to make things worse, they just…killed him off in The Last Stand. It felt like a huge waste of a potentially amazing character.
X-Men ’97 delved deeper into Cyclops’s story, and it looks like the new Avengers: Doomsday movie is planning to do the same with its large cast of characters. While the movie has a lot of heroes, the filmmakers are promising a fresh and unique portrayal of the character that hasn’t been seen in live-action before.
The movie Avengers: Doomsday is scheduled to be released on December 18, 2026, followed by Avengers: Secret Wars on December 17, 2027.
