As a seasoned gamer with decades of League of Legends under my belt, I must say I’ve seen quite a rollercoaster ride when it comes to the world of Riot Games and their multimedia ventures. The news about the Russo brothers’ project falling apart, followed by the success of Arcane on Netflix, has left me both intrigued and amused.

Prior to the launch of the popular Netflix show Arcane based on League of Legends, it was revealed in recent news that Riot Games had previously enlisted the Avengers directors, Joe and Anthony Russo, for the creation of a League of Legends film.

According to Variety’s report, while they announced that something was in the works for a film project, they didn’t provide many details. The story suggests that Riot Studios reconsidered their initial creative strategy proposed to the Russo brothers, leading to disagreements and eventually the project falling apart. It appears that Riot had a contentious deal with the Russo brothers, which resulted in them receiving $5 million as compensation for terminating the contract due to a specific clause within it.

When asked about the details of their agreement by Variety, both AGBO (owned by the Russo Brothers) and Riot chose not to disclose the specifics regarding the type or conditions of the deal.

The report went into detail on the efforts that Riot has gone to in its ambition to create a multimedia universe out of League of Legends. So far, this has amounted to only the TV series Arcane, which Variety said cost $250 million to produce and promote for its 18 episodes (nine each for seasons 1 and 2). The site said this makes Arcane the most expensive animated series in television history. Before this, Riot’s former CEO said Season 1 took six years to make.

As a dedicated gamer, I’ve got some exciting news straight from Riot co-founder Marc Merrill. He’s shared with Variety that they’ve made some adjustments in their strategy when it comes to multimedia projects, but rest assured, their commitment to us gamers hasn’t wavered one bit!

Merrill emphasized that our objectives in the entertainment industry remain constant. From the start, we never aimed to function like a conventional studio, adhering to traditional deadlines. However, as we gained more knowledge, our self-imposed targets evolved. We discovered that achieving perfection requires more time than initially anticipated, so we adjusted our development, production goals, and teams accordingly.

Arcane Season 2 debuts November 9 on Netflix.

As for the Russo brothers, they are coming back to the MCU and will direct Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars.
