Avengers Director Says Future Of Entertainment Lies In The Blending Of Gaming And Linear Storytelling

Over the past ten years, there’s been a significant change in the way entertainment is made and enjoyed, and it’s expected that this will continue to evolve as Generation Z takes over as the main consumers of media. According to directors Joe and Anthony Russo, who worked on Avengers: Endgame and The Electric State, the traditional linear storytelling we know may undergo a substantial transformation, with future entertainment potentially blending gaming and conventional storytelling formats. In a recent interview, they discussed how this could reshape the entertainment landscape.

Joe Russo stated to The Hollywood Reporter, “We find ourselves in significant periods of transformation for traditional visual storytelling. It’s challenging to predict the direction because much of it will depend on Gen Z’s preferences once they take over as primary consumers. As their tastes are shaped by a unique model of consumption, it remains uncertain what they will prefer. I foresee drastic changes, increased immersion, and a combination of virtual and linear storytelling, gaming, and traditional narratives.

The Russos are currently exploring a dual strategy for their projects. “The Electric State” is set to launch its companion video game within this month, while they’re open to creating video games based on their upcoming Marvel films, “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Secret Wars”. This aligns with Russo’s earlier statements suggesting that the future of entertainment will likely revolve around gaming.

An illustration of how entertainment is adapting to captivate Generation Z is evident in the recent mobile adaptation announcement by ZA/UM for Disco Elysium. The studio has expressed its intention to modify the game for quick, bite-sized play sessions. To accommodate smartphone screens, the game has been restructured for vertical viewing and enriched with “360-degree scenes” and fresh audio, aiming to create a more immersive experience.
