The team known as The Avengers requires a bit more time before they come together, as Disney has pushed back the premieres for their forthcoming collaborative movies from Marvel Studios – “Avengers: Doomsday” and “Avengers: Secret Wars.
The movie titled “Doomsday” was initially scheduled to premiere on May 1, 2026, but it has been pushed back to December 18, 2026 – approximately seven months later. In line with this change, the sequel to “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which was previously planned for a release on May 7, 2027, has now been rescheduled for December 17, 2027.
The movie “Doomsday” will premiere in December 2026 instead of May 2026 as previously planned. The release date of the sequel to “Avengers: Secret Wars,” which was set for May 2027, has been moved to December 2027.
Disney revealed on Thursday afternoon that they will be pushing back the release dates for “Avengers” films, simultaneously unveiling a significant reshuffle in their upcoming movie schedule. Interestingly, this revised plan omits several undisclosed Marvel projects from its calendar. Originally scheduled for February 13, 2026, an “Untitled Marvel” film has been taken off the schedule. Additionally, the dates of November 6, 2026 and November 5, 2027, which were previously reserved for “Untitled Marvel” productions, have been redefined as forthcoming “Untitled Disney” films instead.
Following these updates, “Avengers: Doomsday” and Sony’s “Spider-Man: A Fresh Start” are currently the only Marvel Cinematic Universe films set to premiere in cinemas during the year 2026. Interestingly, both “Avengers” sequels will now be released around the same holiday season that “Spider-Man: No Way Home” debuted in 2021. Noteworthy is that there are no Marvel theatrical features scheduled for release between “The Fantastic 4: First Steps” on July 25, 2026 and the fourth Tom Holland “Spider-Man” film on July 31, 2026, a gap of over one year.
The significant reduction of upcoming theatrical Marvel movies matches with Disney CEO Bob Iger’s recently expressed strategy for Marvel’s superhero productions. During an investor conference call, Iger revealed that Marvel Studios had been somewhat scattered by producing too many films and TV series on Disney+. He went on to say, “By streamlining a bit and having Marvel concentrate more on their movies, we believe this will lead to better quality.
Marvel Studios is working on two epic productions titled ‘Doomsday’ and ‘Secret Wars’. These projects boast an extensive ensemble cast, including the MCU comeback of Robert Downey Jr., who will portray the antagonist Doctor Doom this time around. The team-ups also involve characters from ‘Thunderbolts’, the upcoming ‘Fantastic 4: First Steps’ series, and even characters reprising their roles from the ‘X-Men’ franchise such as Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen. Recently, there has been increased activity surrounding ‘Doomsday’ with Downey sharing a picture of him and other cast members heading to watch ‘Thunderbolts’. This suggests a show of support for their fellow Marvel actors.
