Avengers: Doomsdayhas a unique weakness that previous Avengers films never dealt with.
Slated for release on December 18, 2026, Doomsday marks a significant milestone. It’s not only Marvel Studios’ inaugural Phase 6 Avengers movie since Avengers: Endgame, but it also serves as the first solo lead role for Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom, and it’s the Russo Brothers’ return to the MCU since their hit film from 2019.
Avengers: Doomsday Faces a Major MCU Hurdle
Given that the most recent Avengers film, Avengers: Endgame, has been released, there’s a great deal of excitement surrounding the upcoming movie, Avengers: Doomsday, as fans eagerly await it with high expectations.
Although the Russo Brothers are returning as directors and Iron Man actor Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as Doom, the issue with Avengers 5 lies in the fact that its cast has had significantly fewer Marvel Cinematic Universe appearances compared to the cast of Avengers: Infinity War.
Prior to the release of “Infinity War,” Captain America, Thor, Black Widow, and Robert Downey Jr. (RDJ) each made five, seven, and five MCU appearances respectively. However, since the conclusion of the Infinity Saga, no character has had as many appearances as Florence Pugh’s Yelena Belova, who will make her fourth appearance in “Thunderbolts” this year, marking a total of three so far.
In addition to Yelena, only a few other new characters in the MCU have appeared more than once (excluding post-credit scenes). These include Iman Vellani as Ms. Marvel, Teyonah Parris as Monica Rambeau, and Joaquin Torres following the release of “Captain America: Brave New World.
In the course of the Multiverse Saga, these significant Marvel characters – Shang-Chi, Moon Knight, and Shuri acting as the latest Black Panther – have made a single appearance thus far.
When The Fantastic Four movie premieres this year, just like the other characters confirmed by Kevin Feige for Doomsday and beyond, they too will have been announced.
Among the actors who played characters in the Infinity Saga such as Sam Wilson (Falcon), Spiderman, Doctor Strange, Captain Marvel, Hulk, and others, only a few will appear in no more than two films.
As a devoted fan, I can’t help but feel the potential pitfall when it comes to having fewer roles and crossovers in future Avengers films. The emotional bond we, the audience, share with these characters is crucial, and without it, achieving moments as powerful as those in Infinity War or Endgame becomes more challenging.
A significant portion of the later movie’s impactful scenes were built upon subtle jokes and intimate interactions from earlier movies, which the Multiverse Saga characters haven’t had much opportunity to develop yet.
It’s important to mention that a significant part of the charm of the Avengers films lies in watching familiar superheroes interact. However, in the upcoming Doomsday, many Multiverse Saga characters are relatively unknown to viewers.
It appears that Marvel Studios is consciously making these choices. One possible reason could be that they wanted to reunite the Russo brothers and Robert Downey Jr., and also have Chris Evans (though not as Captain America) and Hayley Atwell return as well.
Even though these stars are well-known from the Marvel Cinematic Universe and have a deep history in it, they are anticipated to portray either fresh or Multiverse interpretations of their characters.
How Doomsday Can Pull Off Avengers Expectations
Although the large ensemble of Avengers: Doomsday hasn’t had much shared screen time, it demonstrates that remarkable scenes can still be achieved, even when introducing fresh characters – as seen in Avengers: Infinity War.
Before participating in Infinity War, the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy had previously starred in just two films. Interestingly, although they were not heavily involved with the Marvel Cinematic Universe until then, their encounters with the Avengers turned out to be some of the movie’s highlights, despite a few disagreements from director James Gunn on certain aspects.
Moreover, it’s worth noting that Chadwick Boseman’s Black Panther initially had a supporting part in Captain America: Civil War and later starred in his own movie before Infinity War. Regardless, both he and Wakanda played crucial roles.
The main question is if Avengers 5 will successfully combine appropriate characters, highlight their unique characteristics, and effectively use them in line with the movie’s objectives and time limitations.
Previously, the Russos were successful at accomplishing a task, so it’s possible to achieve it again. Nevertheless, in the case of Doomsday, the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s fresh cast might find themselves competing with Robert Downey Jr. and Chris Evans for screen presence.
As Marvel’s classic superheroes reunite to aid the MCU, there’s a question as to if Marvel Studio’s approach will effectively address its most significant challenge instead.
It’s intriguing to consider whether the cast of “Doomsday” will increase their appearances in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) as we approach “Avengers 5.” This could be noticeable, especially in the post-credit scenes for “Captain America: Brave New World,” “Thunderbolts,” and “The Fantastic Four.”
*Note: “Thunderbolts” is a hypothetical title as there’s no official announcement yet.
As a die-hard movie buff, let me remind fellow fans that the forthcoming film, “Doomsday,” serves as an essential stepping stone for Marvel Studio’s highly anticipated crossover event, “Avengers: Secret Wars.
Avengers: Doomsday arrives in theaters on December 18, 2026.
