Avatar: The Last Airbender Finds Its Toph For Season 2

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for animated series, particularly Avatar: The Last Airbender, I must say I’m thrilled about the casting of Miya Cech as Toph Beifong. Having grown up watching diverse shows that reflected various cultures and backgrounds, it’s heartening to see such representation in the Avatar universe.

Since Netflix brought back Avatar: The Last Airbender for Seasons 2 and 3, fans have been speculating about who would play Toph Beifong, the blind Earthbending fighter. Finding the right actor for Toph was considered crucial to the show, and now we know that Miya Cech (from Netflix’s You Are So Not Invited to My Bat Mitzvah) has won the main role.

At Netflix’s Geeked Week live event on Thursday, the casting was revealed, showcasing a sneak peek into Toph’s talents (you can view it below).

In a combined statement, executive producers Jabbar Raisani and Christine Boylan revealed that a massive number of auditions were received for the role of Toph. However, they both instinctively recognized that Cech was an ideal match for the character right from the start.

They emphasized that they individually evaluate each submission, and after numerous auditions, they both reacted similarly…Miya stands out as their Toph. Miya’s acting skills are exceptional as she perfectly portrays the combination of sarcastic wit, stubbornness, and emotional vulnerability that characterizes Toph Beifong. Her ability to convey these complex emotions and physical expressions truly sets her apart.

As a proud Chinese and Japanese American, I feel honored to embody Toph Beifong and celebrate my heritage in Avatar: The Last Airbender. It’s truly remarkable how this show authentically portrays various Asian cultures within its fantastical universe. Despite being set in a fantasy world, each culture seems to resonate with its history and traditions, making it feel like an authentic representation of the real-world cultures we know and love.

She went on to express her belief that a program featuring such representation would have been unthinkable to her just a few years back.

A couple of years back, it was common to catch one or two of these actors on screen separately in various shows or films. However, what sets this production apart is that we’re all given the opportunity to portray our characters within the same world, work together, and collaborate. It’s truly remarkable and a blessing as an actor.

In this version of the cast, Cech takes on Avatar Aang, Kiawentiio becomes Katara, Ian Ousley portrays Sokka, Dallas Liu is Prince Zuko, Paul Sun-Hyung Lee steps into Uncle Iroh’s role, Ken Leung plays Commander Zhao, and Daniel Dae Kim assumes the part of Fire Lord Ozai.
