Australian Breakdancer Raygun Says Olympics Hate Has Been ‘Devastating’: ‘I Ask the Press to Stop Harassing My Friends and Family’

As an ardent admirer of the resilient and inspiring spirit that is Rachael Gunn, also known as Raygun, I find myself deeply moved by her recent ordeal. It’s disheartening to see such a vibrant, creative, and talented individual face undue criticism and harassment, especially after bringing joy and excitement to millions with her unique dance style during the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Australian breakdancer Rachael Gunn, popularly known as Raygun, is publicly addressing the harassment she has encountered following her viral performance during the 2024 Paris Olympics. Her unique dance routines during her competition against Logan Edra (U.S.), Dominika Banevič (Lithuania), and Sya Dembélé (France) attracted global attention, but also sparked allegations that Raygun unfairly influenced Australia’s Olympic selection process.

Raygun began by expressing her gratitude to everyone who’s stood by her, in a video shared on Instagram. She cherishes the positivity and is happy she could bring some happiness into your lives, as that was her intention. However, she didn’t anticipate that this would also invite so much negativity, which, honestly, has been quite hard to handle.

“Upon stepping outside, I enjoyed myself immensely, yet I didn’t neglect the gravity of the situation. In fact, I put in a tremendous amount of effort preparing for the Olympics. I gave it my absolute best, and I am deeply proud of that. It was an honor to represent Australia in the Olympics and be part of the historic debut of breaking.”

Raygun advised the individuals alleging she tampered with the Olympic selection process to address the Australian Olympic Committee, as they have already denied these accusations publicly. She also mentioned that she is currently on a previously scheduled break in Europe after the Olympics.

“She requested that the media cease troubling her family, friends, the local breakdance community in Australia, and the wider street dance community. Everyone has endured much due to these circumstances, so she kindly asks for their privacy to be protected.”

Raygun, who had been humorously imitated by Rachel Dratch on “The Tonight Show” recently, shared with reporters (through ESPN) following the widespread popularity of her Olympic performance that “every single movement I perform is unique.”

“Creativity holds significant value for me. I express my artistic talents, and here’s what I shared: My creations may resonate with the judges or not, but that’s not the point. I continue to create, and each piece embodies art in its own way. That’s the essence of it.”
