Assassin's Creed Shadows Producer: Four-Year Dev Time Is "Right Balance" For Series

As a dedicated Assassin’s Creed fan with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must say that the upcoming release of Assassin’s Creed Shadows has me absolutely thrilled! Four years in the making, this game promises to be a masterpiece, giving us more time for Ubisoft to perfect every aspect.

In “Assassin’s Creed: Shadows,” Ubisoft achieved a new milestone, with its development period being the longest in the series to date. As stated by Onnée, this extended four-year development phase provided an optimal environment for crafting the game, incorporating feedback, and refining aspects that required improvement.

Onnée shared with Gamesindustry.Biz that Shadows is about constantly striving for improvement. They are exploring the boundaries of their capabilities in this project. Balancing time and resources, Onnée believes that more time allows for more iterations, even though adding more team members might speed up production. However, it doesn’t necessarily grant additional time for refining ideas through player feedback, testing, and adjustments. Onnée feels that a four-year development cycle offers the ideal balance between initial concept and final product, allowing for essential feedback and adaptations.

As a dedicated gamer, I immersed myself in Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, which dropped in November 2020. Since then, Ubisoft has been consistently enriching my Viking adventure with significant expansions like Wrath of the Druids and Dawn of Ragnarok. Plus, they’ve thrown in some spin-off titles, such as Assassin’s Creed Mirage, keeping the lore fresh and engaging.

Lately, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot has spoken out about the harmful and individually targeted online criticisms faced by some of the company’s employees following the announcement of Assassin’s Creed: Shadow.

After Assassin’s Creed Shadow, there are several remakes of previous Assassin’s Creed titles being worked on right now. These might help bridge the long period before new main series games are released.
