Assassin's Creed Shadows Hit With 4-Month Delay, Will Launch in 2025

As a seasoned Assassin’s Creed fan with over a decade of gaming under my belt, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and anticipation about the upcoming release of Shadows. Having experienced the highs and lows of this beloved franchise, I understand that delays are sometimes necessary to ensure a polished final product.

Since May 15th of this year when the game was officially announced, many long-term fans and curious newcomers of Assassin’s Creed Shadows have been anxiously looking forward to November. This marks the first significant installment since late 2020, with developers once again exploring the limits of technology to enhance the gaming experience. Unfortunately, it appears that the release date for Assassin’s Creed Shadows will be slightly delayed beyond initial expectations.

Assassin’s Creed Shadows delayed to February 2025

Assassin's Creed Shadows Hit With 4-Month Delay, Will Launch in 2025

As an ardent fan, I would’ve been thrilled to see Ubisoft showcasing their latest work at this year’s Tokyo Games Show, particularly focusing on the highly anticipated Assassin’s Creed: Shadows. However, to my surprise, they’ve decided to pull out of the event without providing any details. Now, in an official announcement, Ubisoft has revealed that the launch date for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows is being pushed back by four months.

Marc-Alexis Côté, speaking on behalf of the development team, shared that they require additional time to perfect and enhance the gaming experience, focusing more intensely on certain essential features. The new release date set for February 14, 2025, indicates that Assassin’s Creed Shadows will have one of the longest production cycles in the series history.

For approximately three years, Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was worked on prior to its release in late 2018, and the following game, Assassin’s Creed Valhalla, also underwent around three years of development before debuting in late 2020. The exception is the recently released Assassin’s Creed Mirage, which initially started as an expansion for Valhalla and spent several years in development before being launched as a more compact standalone title in late 2023.

As a dedicated fan, I’ve been eagerly anticipating Assassin’s Creed: Shadows since its announcement, following closely after the release of Valhalla. However, it seems that some parts of the team diverting attention to bring Mirage to fruition as a standalone game may have affected the smooth progression of Shadows’ development. If the current release date on February 14, 2025 holds without any additional delays, this long-awaited title will have taken approximately four and a half years to materialize. I can hardly wait!

Regardless of whether the hold-up was mainly due to Mirage or the complexities of refining specific new elements, the fact that the studio is delaying the release for improvements isn’t necessarily a negative. Valhalla might have benefited from a delay, as it debuted with numerous bugs, causing it to crash approximately every few hours on PS4. While it was an outstanding game overall, it was launched with existing problems that needed resolution in subsequent updates post-launch.

It’s anticipated that the additional production time for Assassin’s Creed: Shadows will yield positive results, ensuring a smoother launch compared to Valhalla. The announcement made today also explains that initial preorders will be refunded, and all future preorders will receive the first expansion at no extra cost. Provided there are no further setbacks, Ubisoft plans to resume preorders and share an update on the game within a few months.
