In recent Assassin’s Creed games, such as Origins, the series has shifted away from its traditional stealth-focused gameplay towards role-playing game (RPG) elements. This change has been noticeable since Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate, and now for the first time in a while, players who dislike the level grind and loot collection aspects typical of modern entries have an alternative option available to them.

It’s clear that the progression of Assassin’s Creed has undeniably introduced significant upgrades to the series, but it seems that the original charm as a stealth game has somewhat waned. The sense of necessity for stealth, which was so profound in games like AC2, is seldom felt today.

Nevertheless, introducing Yasuke as a combat specialist allows Naoe to stand out as an assassin instead. Particularly in one challenging mode on the settings menu, the assassin experience is emphasized once more.

Assassin’s Creed finally earns the assassin name again

As a fellow gamer, I can’t help but reminisce about my initial thrill with Assassin’s Creed: Origins when it first graced our screens. Initially, when I found myself in a position to execute an enemy, a sense of unease surfaced because instead of instantly dying, they had a health bar that wasn’t fully depleted. Starting from Origins, the new RPG direction made it necessary for players to level up and tailor their gameplay towards being an assassin. Regrettably, the experience I expected from this series no longer seemed present.

Although some players found satisfaction in crafting a flawless setup to eliminate opponents quickly, that aspect didn’t resonate with me. Instead, I play Assassin’s Creed primarily because I want the experience of being an assassin.

As I journeyed through the enigmatic world of Shadows, I found myself meticulously progressing through numerous stages to unlock the later segments of the Assassin skill tree. This coveted ability, capable of delivering true one-shot stealth kills, was tantalizingly out of reach until the very end of my adventure.

However, one small setting that’s kind of hard to find changes this completely.

You can access the Guaranteed Assassination setting more easily by navigating to the gameplay tab and finding it in a separate sub-menu. This feature stands independently from the other two difficulty adjusters, ensuring it functions effectively on its own.

If you share my adventurous spirit, you’ll likely bypass the narrative entirely upon encountering an open world, spotting a formidable castle on the horizon, and dashing straight towards it. That’s exactly what I did, and it was a thrilling experience. However, this exhilarating journey wouldn’t have been feasible without the right setting activated.

Due to successfully defeating the three Samurai quickly, which allowed me to seize the substantial prize located atop Osaka, I managed to accomplish this task ahead of schedule, even while playing on Expert mode.

As soon as I was spotted, my cover was blown. At best, I had to scramble and conceal myself. Engaging in the game on its challenging setting, particularly with the stealth mechanics, significantly enhances the gaming experience compared to the recent installments that primarily relied on combat.

Previously, increasing difficulty meant spending more hours grinding. But why not choose Easy mode to breeze through the game quicker if it feels like everyone’s just soaking up content? With Shadows, you can finally embody an assassin, using your skills, patience, and strategy instead of sheer time investment, to outsmart opponents and emerge victorious.

Regarding the exceptional gameplay mechanics outside of Yasuke’s role, the stealth aspect offers a delightful and nostalgic experience reminiscent of what initially drew me into this cherished series.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but reflect on how I might have missed the enchanting essence of Assassin’s Creed Shadows had I overlooked its captivating setting. There are hidden gems in the game’s settings, such as the seemingly ordinary Immersive Mode, which, in reality, transforms the gaming experience into what it was truly intended to be.
