Assassin’s Creed Shadows delay reason revealed by Ubisoft and it’s not what you think

As a seasoned gamer with years of gaming history under my belt, I must say that while I understand the need for delays to ensure a polished product, the delay of Assassin’s Creed Shadows to February 2025 feels like an eternity. The historical accuracy concerns and the reported miscommunication between teams are certainly concerning, but as someone who’s waited patiently for games like this, I can only hope that Ubisoft uses this extra time wisely to address these issues.

Sadly, the release date for Assassin’s Creed Shadows has been pushed back to February 2025, and now we understand the cause behind this delay.

Ubisoft postponed the game release at the end of September, explaining that the launch of Star Wars Outlaws didn’t meet their expectations. Some fans speculated that the unveiling of the Ghosts of Tsushima sequel’s trailer might have played a part as well, but this was probably just a coincidence.

Although the game has all its planned features, we decided to spend extra time refining it based on lessons learned from the release of Star Wars Outlaws.

On the other hand, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson communicated with the game developers to uncover the true causes of the delay. The developers revealed to Henderson that they had been urging Ubisoft to postpone the game for quite a while now, and finally received approval for the delay.

Concerning the delay, Henderson explained, “Apparently, historical experts were not involved in the project as early as they typically would be for a project of this size. Additionally, there seems to have been a lack of clear communication between teams and some shortcuts taken during the approval process of assets to meet deadlines, which may have contributed to the issues that slipped through.

Seven team members involved in the project have advocated for a postponement for quite some time now, and their request has even been recognized at other studios within the company. However, the decision to delay ultimately stems from a rigid development schedule and the necessity to tackle problems arising from this fixed timeline.

As a devoted admirer, I’ve shared the same apprehensions as many others regarding the representation of Samurai Yasuke in the game. It seems there’s been a focus on historical accuracy that has sparked some discussions. Fortunately, the team has acknowledged these concerns and is actively working to address them. This might involve altering aspects of Yasuke’s story and character within the game, rectifying architectural details, and ensuring the game maintains historical authenticity while seamlessly integrating with the Assassin’s Creed universe.

In other words, it has been verified by Ubisoft that Yasuke and Naoe will continue as playable characters in the upcoming Assassin’s Creed game, and they won’t be taken out due to online comments. Although adjusting parts of Yasuke’s character might contribute to the delay, the primary reason for the postponement is to provide developers with additional time to finely tune their intricate vision for an Assassin’s Creed title set in feudal Japan.
