According to a recent report, the modern-day segments featuring characters outside of the Animus – those seen in Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag – will likely be removed from the upcoming remake.
IGN reports that the modern-day portions of the upcoming Black Flag remake-where players leave the Animus simulation to explore the Abstergo Entertainment offices and understand the story behind Edward Kenway-have been removed. The remake is currently expected to release around 2026.
These parts of the game were crucial to the storyline. After the events of Assassin’s Creed III, Abstergo discovered new methods for accessing genetic memories and wanted to use you – the player character in the modern-day sections – to learn about Edward Kenway, the late Desmond Miles, and the power they sought. You, along with a group of rebels, stop Abstergo from gaining ultimate control by escaping and hacking into several Animuses, all while playing as the pirate-turned-assassin Kenway, engaging in gunfights and swordplay.
According to Jeuxvideo, Ubisoft is adding extra content to the Black Flag remake to compensate for previously removed material. This includes a new storyline focusing on the pirate and assassin Mary Read, which wasn’t originally in the game. It’s currently unknown whether this added content will significantly extend the game’s approximately 24-hour playtime.
In addition to removing some newer content, the upcoming remake is expected to feature significant improvements. This includes a revamped combat system and gear, aiming to make the gameplay feel more like recent Assassin’s Creed titles such as Valhalla and Shadows, bringing it up to modern standards.
Good news for Assassin’s Creed Shadows players: the ‘Claws of Awaji’ expansion is now available! This free DLC, developed by the team behind Mirage, adds 10 hours of new story content, along with new gear and weapons. A recent update also arrived alongside the expansion, increasing the level cap and adding more upgrade options.
Assassin’s Creed Shadows is available on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
