The anime adaptation of Devil May Cry has sparked debate among fans, but it’s undeniably a triumph for Netflix. Despite only recently premiering, it has already secured approval for a second season, indicating its success.
Feedback on the Devil May Cry series has been mixed, with professionals giving it high marks but users showing a divide in opinion. Those who have played the games are disappointed by the departures from the original content, while those new to the series appear to be finding it entertaining. Despite this split reaction, the show is doing well on Netflix, and they seem eager to explore more of the franchise.
However, a seemingly innocuous moment from the series ignited debate for an unexpected cause: A character resembling the popular streamer Asmongold was present in the initial episode itself.
Although the show itself didn’t explicitly identify him, comments made by showrunner Adi Shankar beyond the show suggest the person he was hinting at. His admiration for the streaming platform has not been missed.
Devil May Cry showrunner says Asmongold ‘spits facts’
When Devil May Cry was released, a livestreamer in the game series was pointed out who looked remarkably like Asmongold. If you compare them directly, it’s challenging not to notice the similarity. The depiction is strikingly accurate, right down to the specific teeth he’s missing.
I find it unbelievable, yet somehow fitting, that the character in Netflix’s ‘Devil May Cry’ sports an uncanny resemblance to Asmongold – same beard, white shirt, and all, even with a few missing teeth!

Initially, it seemed like a playful nod, but then showrunner Adi Shankar shared several pictures of Asmongold on his Twitter feed without any explanation. Later, he posted a side-by-side comparison photo, making it clear that the streamer was indeed the character he had in mind for the show.
“I’ve never been more excited for a Season 2 in my life,” the Asmongold replied.
Shankar echoed his enthusiasm, lauding the streamer and expressing that the character’s development in the series aligns perfectly with his impression of the streamer.
The purpose of this character’s dialogue is to make it seem absurd or unbelievable. He comes across as someone who might believe in wild theories, yet it’s revealed later on that everything he claimed was actually true.
As they chuckled and idolized those puppets on late-night shows, designed to keep them oblivious of reality, little did they know the terrifying demons from the underworld were lurking nearby! Yet here I stand, ready to drop knowledge – truth always rings true, Shankar here.
On this tweet, opinions are sharply split: some applaud his perspective about Asmongold and concur with it, while others criticize his management of the show and his stance on the contentious streamer he supports.
