Over the span of 24 distinct anime episodes, I’ve noticed that Ash Ketchum never managed to collect them all, yet he successfully captured numerous Pokémon. Among his formidable companions are Pikachu, Lucario, Infernape, and Greninja. Regrettably, many of Ash’s Pokémon lack the strength found in his reliable champions.
In the world of Pokémon anime, Ash Ketchum is considered the most skilled trainer, yet many of his Pokémons are less effective in battles. However, starting from the XY series, he significantly improved at nurturing and training his teams. Regrettably, during his initial five journeys, Ash often relied on underperforming Pokémon. These Pokémon have disappointing win-loss records in formal contests, are redundant due to other Pokémons within his collection, and even floundered in battles that should have been easily won.
Tauros Only Has a Single Impressive Victory to its Name
Among all the Tauros caught in the Original Series by Ash, there are a total of 30. However, most of these Pokémon aren’t utilized throughout the anime series. On occasion, Ash does employ one of his Tauros. If the strongest among them, it’s understandable why he doesn’t bother with the rest, as its power is evidently superior.
During Ash’s fight against Drake, the Orange League Champion, Tauros shines brightest. In this matchup, Tauros manages to take down Venusaur but falls to Dragonite. Unfortunately, Tauros also loses its three consecutive battles, demonstrating a lack of effectiveness when faced against Gary’s Nidoqueen during the Silver Conference.
Torterra Goes on a Massive Losing Streak After Evolving
Initially in the Diamond and Pearl anime, Turtwig was a notable member of the team. This trait persisted as it transformed into Grotle, suggesting it might become the star of the Sinnoh team. Regrettably, upon its final evolution into Torterra, it failed to live up to expectations.
After its evolution, Torterra consistently loses every battle it participates in during the Lily of the Valley Conference, despite being an advanced form of a Starter Pokémon with impressive past performance. This makes it Ash’s least effective Pokémon. Infernape was better suited as Ash’s main Sinnoh combatant due to its superior strength, but that doesn’t diminish Torterra’s former prowess. A more fitting description might have been “Torterra struggled in the Lily of the Valley Conference,” rather than portraying it as a weak or insignificant Pokémon.
Torkoal is a Crybaby and Notorious For Losing Often
In simpler terms, among Ash’s team from Hoenn region, Torkoal is the least strong member. Typically, Ash’s Fire-type Pokémon are tough fighters who enjoy battles. However, Torkoal often shows fear and has a poor win-loss record. But it did show its worth during the Gym Battle against Norman by defeating his Slakoth. That seems to be its only significant achievement so far.
Ash appeared to grasp Torkoal’s ineffectiveness in battle sufficiently to leave him with Professor Oak when he set off to confront the Battle Frontier with his other Pokémon from Hoenn, but he continued to employ him repeatedly in later instances. These choices led Torkoal to engage in fights against two Legendary Pokémon, with the expected results transpiring. Torkoal suffers a crushing defeat at the hands of Pyramid King Brandon’s Registeel, and fares even worse against Tobaias’ Darkrai.
Totodile is the Weakest Member of Ash’s Johto Team
Despite Ash’s Totodile being part of his team, it can be overlooked due to its ineffectiveness in battles. Compared to the rest of Ash’s Johto squad, which is generally average, Totodile doesn’t make a significant impact. Over the course of his journey with Ash, Totodile manages to win only one significant battle. However, even this victory against Harrison’s Sneasel is noteworthy as it takes place in a match that Ash ultimately loses.
Before the Silver Conference, Ash had only used Totodile in one Gym Battle. Much like many children who played Pokémon Gold and Silver, this battle proved disastrous for Totodile as it was defeated by Whitney’s Miltank. It’s unfortunate that despite Ash’s other two Johto Starter Pokémon growing stronger and evolving, poor Totodile never had the same opportunity.
Oshawott is Over-Shadowed by Pignite and Krookodile
Ash’s team from Unova is his biggest yet, unfortunately it’s also his least effective. Many members on the team don’t have enough time to grow and improve, making them underperforming in battles. Oshawott isn’t the most severe example of this issue, but it remains Ash’s least powerful Water-type Starter Pokémon.
In most of Ash’s Pokémon from Unova, Oshawott engages in more fights than others; however, this high battle participation doesn’t equate to a favorable win-loss record. Among its opponents are Trip’s Tranquill, Lenora’s Watchog, Chili’s Fire-type Pansear, and the reckless Cameron’s Hydreigon. Despite some victories, these successes don’t offset Oshawott’s frequent below-par performances.
Unfezent Does Nothing Memorable Throughout All of Black and White
In most seasons of the Pokémon series, Ash captures a new regional flying monster and manages to fully evolve it. Some of these Flying-type creatures are quite remarkable, like his Swellow, Staraptor, and Talonflame. On the other hand, there’s Unfezent, which is not particularly impressive.
Among all the battles Ash’s Unova team has been in, Unfezant manages to win only one major battle – the one where it defeats Skyla’s Swanna. However, in every other fight it engages in, Unfezant comes up short. Despite being with Ash for a longer period than any other team member, it consistently fails. The most embarrassing defeat for Unfezant was against Cameron’s un-evolved Flying-type Riolu, who, theoretically, should have been at a disadvantage compared to Unfezant.
Boldore Could Have Been More Effective if it Had Evolved
Among Ash’s Unova team’s less robust members, Boldore showed considerable promise. It demonstrated its prowess during Ash’s Gym Battle against Clay, and with further development, it could have transformed into the formidable and powerful Gigalith. Regrettably, much like most of its teammates, Boldore unfortunately remained underdeveloped.
Similar to many members of the Unova squad, Boldore seldom gets the chance to fight. Its only notable victory, against Clay’s Excadrill, stands out, but it tends to lose more battles than it wins. Regrettably, Ash could have had another formidable companion alongside Krookodile, but instead, Boldore is easily overshadowed and forgettable.
Pidgeot Never Gets the Chance to Showcase its Power After Evolving
Although Ash’s Kanto team is his least successful, many of its members have demonstrated remarkable power. For instance, Squirtle, Bulbasaur, Kingler, and Muk have shown their might when they helped Ash defeat Brandon and during the Indigo Plateau Conference. However, unlike the others, Pidgeot has yet to receive such recognition.
During its time with Ash, the Pidgeotto consistently lost every battle it was involved in. However, because Ash had not yet used it as a Pidgeot before releasing it, this doesn’t necessarily mean it was his weakest Pokémon. It could be that since its evolution into a Pidgeot, it has become strong enough to win battles on occasion.
There Was No Reason For Ash to Have Snivy on His Team
Among Ash’s Unova team, his Leavanny stands out as one of the more respectable Pokémon. Leavanny, a fully-evolved Grass-type, boasts an acceptable win-loss record and shares a special, well-crafted bond with Ash. On the contrary, Ash’s Snivy, another Grass-type, is often criticized for being both weak and uninteresting when compared to Leavanny.
Among all of Ash’s Pokemon, Snivy has one of the poorest win-to-loss records, even though it often battles weaker opponents compared to most of them. Some of Snivy’s most disappointing losses occurred against Elesa’s Emolga, Clay’s Excadrill, and Cameron’s Lucario. Other early-stage Grass Pokemon that Ash has trained, such as Bulbasaur and Rowlett, have performed well, but due to the large number of Pokemon in Ash’s Unova team, Snivy didn’t get enough training or focus from Ash.
Palpitoad Is Completely Worthless as a Battler
Apart from being part of Ash’s least effective squad, it’s worth noting that Palpitoad is also the weakest Pokemon in the entire anime series for Ash. Being a first-stage Pokemon, it seldom trains or takes part in significant battles and often doesn’t come out on top even when it does participate. While its win-loss ratio might not make it the worst performer among Ash’s team, its overall performance stands out as less than impressive compared to his other underachieving Pokemon.
Due to Oshawott’s penchant for stealing the limelight, it seems like Palpitad often finds itself on the sidelines during battles. It suffers defeats at the hands of Elesa’s Emolga and Roxie’s Garbodor, and even against Stephan’s Zebstrika, it can only manage a stalemate. However, in a rare victory, it manages to best Elesa’s Zebstrika during a Gym Battle or the Vertress Conference, solely due to its resistance to Electric-type attacks.
