Asghar Farhadi Returns to Paris with Star-Studded ‘Parallel Tales’ Bash

Twelve years following his initial directorial venture in French language with the movie “The Past”, renowned Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi, a two-time Oscar winner, is preparing to revisit Paris for his upcoming production titled “Parallel Tales”.

The upcoming movie, with its storyline yet unveiled, gathers a formidable ensemble of French actors. This includes Isabelle Huppert (“Elle”), Virginie Efira (“Benedetta”), Vincent Cassel (“Black Swan”), Pierre Niney (“The Count of Monte Cristo”), and Adam Bessa (“Ghost Trail”). The legendary actress Catherine Deneuve is also set to feature in this film.

The highly-anticipated project, co-created by Alexandre Mallet-Guy along with Asghar Farhadi and David Levine, will be introduced by Charades and UTA Independent Film Group at the forthcoming Cannes Film Market. Charades will manage international distribution, while UTA Independent Film Group will oversee U.S. distribution rights. Production for “Parallel Tales” is scheduled to commence in Paris this autumn, with Farhadi at the helm.

In this version, I’ve attempted to make the text more conversational and easier to understand, maintaining the original meaning while making it sound less formal.

The latest movie by the Iranian filmmaker, titled “A Hero,” received the top honor (Grand Prize) at Cannes Film Festival in 2021 and also got a nomination for the Golden Globe award.

As a devoted cinephile, I eagerly anticipate the release of Farhadi’s new film titled “Parallel Tales,” which serves as his follow-up to the critically acclaimed “A Hero” that won the Grand Prize at Cannes in 2021. This esteemed director has a special connection with Mallet-Guy, and we’ve seen his magic before in films like “The Past.” This masterpiece featured Tahar Rahim and Berenice Bejo in lead roles and was showcased at Cannes in 2013. Not only did Bejo win the Best Actress award that year, but the film also garnered five César nominations and a Golden Globe nod in 2014.

Apart from “The Past,” Mallet-Guy’s Parisian company, Memento Production, has also produced three additional films by Farhadi: “The Salesman,” which won two Cannes awards for its screenplay and lead actor in 2016 and the Oscar for best foreign language film the year after; “Everybody Knows,” Farhadi’s first Spanish-language movie starring Penelope Cruz and Javier Bardem, which premiered and competed at Cannes in 2018; and finally “A Hero.” In addition to producing these films, Memento, one of France’s leading distribution companies, will be responsible for the French release of “Parallel Tales.

As a cinema enthusiast, I’m absolutely thrilled about the ensemble cast of “Parallel Tales.” This film brings together some of the most prominent figures in French cinema from various generations and film landscapes, such as Huppert and Efira, and Cassel and Niney. The latter two recently made a significant impact with their collaboration on “The Count of Monte-Cristo,” which became France’s second highest-grossing movie in 2024, selling an impressive 10 million tickets. To add to the excitement, Bessa, a promising young talent from France, was even nominated for a Cesar Award for his role in “Ghost Trail” this year. I can hardly wait to see these talented artists come together on the big screen!

The movie titled ‘Parallel Tales’ is slated for a theater release in France during Spring 2026. This production is a collaboration between Memento Production (Alexandre Mallet-Guy) from France, Lucky Red (Andrea Occhipinti) from Italy, Panache Productions (André Logie) and La Compagnie Cinématographique (Gaëtan David) from Belgium. Additionally, Anonymous Content from the US will participate in the production of this film.

Memento Productions, known for its distinctive films like Nuri Bilge Ceylan’s Palme d’Or winners “Winter Sleep” and “On Barren Weeds,” is preparing for a significant showing at the Cannes Film Festival with Tarik Saleh’s “Eagles of The Republic.” This film marks a second collaboration between Memento Productions and Saleh, following their successful partnership on “Cairo Conspiracy,” which won the Best Script award at Cannes in 2022.

Anonymous Content boasts a portfolio featuring Academy Award-winning movies like “The Revenant,” “Spotlight,” “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind,” and “Mr. Robot.” They are also involved in current and upcoming ventures such as “The Nickel Boys,” the fourth season of “True Detective,” Alfonso Cuarón’s “Disclaimer,” a new adaptation of “East of Eden” with Florence Pugh, and “Neuromancer” starring Callum Turner.

The executive producers for this project are Carole Baraton, Yohann Comte, Pierre Mazars, Yousra Filali, Stefano Massenzi, Chadwick Prichard, Krzysztof Piesiewicz, Maciej Musial and Lila Yacoub.
