Arnold Schwarzenegger Secretly Returned for a Terminator Sequel 7 Years Before T3

The films that came after it have been a mix, but Terminator 2: Judgment Day still stands as a timeless classic and interestingly, it had a sort of sequel before Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines. James Cameron’s sequel to The Terminator was released in 1991, making one of the most powerful cinematic duos ever. It wasn’t until another ten years that we saw the third installment of The Terminator, which fell short of expectations, as have many of the subsequent sequels.

In a slightly different phrasing: Arnold Schwarzenegger, the main action star of the film series, has been present in every movie except one, even though its reviews were mixed. Interestingly, he unexpectedly returned to portray the Terminator between the second and third films. Later on, he reprised his role for a unique attraction show at Universal Studios locations in Florida, Hollywood, and Japan. However, it’s important to note that he was not alone in these performances.

Arnold Schwarzenegger Featured In The “Battle Across Time” Terminator Ride Set After Judgment Day

The Cast & Director Returned For This Attraction

1996 marked my debut as a captivating experience at Universal Studios: T2-3D: Battle Across Time. I wasn’t your ordinary attraction; I was an official sequel to T2: Judgment Day, continuing the thrilling saga of the Terminator franchise. The first act starred a Skynet hostess who showcased their latest innovations on video, while the second act brought the 3D short film to life through immersive performer interactions.

This brief 24-minute film is reported to have cost approximately $24 million to create, placing it among the most expensive movies per minute ever made (as reported in the Orlando Sentinel). While this budget might appear substantial, it marked the comeback of James Cameron, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Linda Hamilton as Sarah Connor, Robert Patrick as the T-1000, and Edward Furlong as John Connor.

The narrative follows John and Sarah crashing into a performance, pursued by the liquid metal T-1000 until the robust T-800 (Schwarzenegger) intervenes, whisking John away through a time gate to the future war between robots and mankind in 2032. This dynamic duo fights off Hunter-Killers and the T-1000 before confronting the spider-like T-1000000. Eventually, the T-800 sends John back through time while destroying Skynet and the T-1000000. Notably, this experience gives you a sense of immersion, simulating combat by soaking you with water and jolting you during the climactic blast.

Battle Across Time’s Storyline Is No Worse Than Schwarzenegger’s Other Terminator Sequels

There’s Not Much To It, Putting It In Line With The Other Sequels

Initially, the storyline of Battle Across Time may appear straightforward and not typically associated with James Cameron or Arnold Schwarzenegger. Yet, it’s possible that they agreed to revisit this project due to its original concept, a trait Cameron often appreciates, and the enduring popularity of the franchise. Regrettably, subsequent sequels fell short of expectations and might have fared better by adopting the straightforward approach characteristic of this special attraction.

None of the movies have been able to deliver a compelling storyline that resonated with audiences, often leaving viewers feeling disappointed. However, even though this short film may not be the Terminator 2 sequel that longtime fans had hoped for, it’s at least on par with Rise of the Machines, Salvation, and Genisys.

Movie Release Year RT Score
The Terminator 1984 100%
Terminator 2: Judgment Day 1991 91%
Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines 2003 70%
Terminator Salvation 2009 33%
Terminator Genisys 2015 26%
Terminator: Dark Fate 2019 70%

There’s been talk that the short film seems to contradict Cameron’s time travel rules because the T-800 appears fully dressed on a motorcycle, while characters who time traveled before in these films appear naked. While it’s reasonable to question this inconsistency, it might simply be due to avoiding an R-rating for the Universal Studios ride. Nevertheless, plot inconsistencies are quite common in the Terminator sequels, so Battle Across Time aligns well with that pattern.
