Uwe Boll, a German filmmaker, decided to rename his upcoming crime thriller featuring Armie Hammer, initially titled “The Dark Knight”, to “Citizen Vigilante” following feedback from Warner Bros. and Batman enthusiasts.
According to an initial storyline by Boll, the movie features Hammer as Sanders, a character who decides to administer justice personally and pursues lawbreakers. His vigilante pursuit earns him popularity on social media and is viewed as a hero by the public. EbMaster has contacted Warner Bros. for their thoughts on the title modification.
Warner Bros. and us had a pleasant chat, resulting in our decision to rename our project ‘Citizen Vigilante’ as a means to prevent mix-ups with one of their well-known characters,” Boll shared with EbMaster. (Informal)

“We chatted amicably with Warner Bros. and opted to alter the title of our production to ‘Citizen Vigilante’, in order to steer clear of any misunderstandings regarding one of their renowned characters,” is what Boll conveyed to EbMaster. (Formal)
Additionally, we received numerous comments from fans requesting a change to the title due to its resemblance to Chris Nolan’s film. This was another reason for adjusting the title, as stated by executive producer Michael Roesch.”
Michael Roesch, the executive producer, mentioned that changing the title was necessary because fans frequently asked for it, since the original title resembled a movie directed by Chris Nolan. This factor also played a role in our decision to alter the title.
I was delighted when Warner Bros. approached us for a friendly conversation about altering our title. It was all quite cordial, I must say.
The team got a substantial amount of input from social media platforms, emails, and comments on news articles, as Roesch pointed out.
The entire movie was filmed in and around Zagreb, Croatia, with Costas Mandylor portraying the role of Interpol agent Henry, who is determined to take down the antagonist Sanders.
The film is based in a city that resembles Zagreb, although the exact name isn’t disclosed within the movie. However, those familiar with the city can identify it as being from Croatia, according to Roesch. Yet, the narrative is broad and could be adapted to play out in any major European city.
Hammer, the former actor who faced serious accusations of sexual misconduct in 2021, is making a return to the spotlight under the name ‘Citizen Vigilante.’ Despite no charges being filed against him by Los Angeles prosecutors after an extensive investigation, opportunities for work were hard to come by until very recently.
Last year, the actor who played the lead in “Call Me by Your Name” resumed work on the upcoming western film “Frontier Crucible,” directed by Travis Mills. This movie also stars Thomas Jane and William H. Macy. Prior to this, Hammer’s resume includes notable projects like Gore Verbinski’s “The Lone Ranger,” where he acted alongside Johnny Depp, and Guy Ritchie’s “The Man from U.N.C.L.E.” alongside Henry Cavill.
Ethan Maniquis is presently editing the film titled ‘Citizen Vigilante.’ Post-production duties are being handled by Tunnel in Santa Monica. According to Roesch, the movie is anticipated to be finalized within a few weeks.
The production has also signed composer Rodolfo Matulich to score the pic.
The team plans to showcase “Citizen Vigilante” during this year’s Cannes Film Market, ensuring they have a promotional video ready. However, Roesch mentioned that despite being early, it’s unlikely the entire film will be completed in time for the event.
