As a seasoned cinephile with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and delving into the rich tapestry of Southern storytelling, I am thoroughly thrilled about the return of the Filmland Film Festival to the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. The diverse lineup of films and panels promises an immersive cinematic experience that resonates deeply with my own life journey.
The Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts will play host to the comeback of the Filmland Film Festival, running from August 14th to the 18th, organized by the Arkansas Cinema Society. Notably, Colman Domingo will receive the first-ever Southern Storytellers award during this event.
On Sunday, Domingo is being awarded for his outstanding role in “Sing Sing,” produced by A24. In this movie, he plays Divine G, a man falsely imprisoned who discovers meaning by acting with fellow inmates in a prison theater group. After the screening, Domingo will engage in a discussion alongside co-writer and producer Bentley, producer Walton, and moderator Nichols about the film.
Peter Debruge, the leading film critic from EbMaster, will moderate the Southern Storytellers panel, a presentation by EbMaster. The event will include speakers Domingo (known for “Sing Sing” and “Rustin”), Jeff Nichols (“The Bikeriders”), Craig Brewer (“Hustle & Flow” and “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist”), Kyle Hausmann-Stokes (“My Dead Friend Zoe”), Michael Schwartz (“The Peanut Butter Falcon” and “Los Frikis”), Christy Hall (“Daddio” and “It Ends With Us”), Clint Bentley (“Sing Sing” and “Jockey”) and Monique Walton (“Sing Sing” and “Bull”).
On August 14, Hart Denton and actor-producer Dylan Sprouse are set to showcase their movie, “The Duel,” during a special highlight. After the screening, both will join for a Q&A session. It’s worth noting that Denton hails from Little Rock.
You’ll get a sneak peek at “Fight Night: The Million Dollar Heist” on Peacock, followed by a question-and-answer session with the show’s director and executive producer, Brewer, afterward.
At the festival, you’ll find other screenings like “My Dead Friend Zoe,” “Los Frikis,” “Daddio,” and “The Peanut Butter Falcon.” For a complete schedule of Filmland events, check out their official website.
