Ariana Grande Speculates — and Kristin Chenoweth Agrees — That Glinda in ‘Wicked’ Might Be ‘A Little in the Closet’

As a longtime fan of musical theater and the enchanting world of Oz, I find Ariana Grande’s perspective on the potential queerness of Glinda and the land of Oz incredibly refreshing and delightful! It’s always exciting to see characters that transcend traditional gender norms and embrace a more fluid identity.

Could Glinda the Good Witch also be Glinda the Gay Witch? “Wicked” star Ariana Grande thinks she “might be a little in the closet” — and original Broadway lead Kristin Chenoweth agrees.

During a chat with The Gay Times prior to the release of the film adaptation, Ariana Grande and her costar Cynthia Erivo spoke about the underlying queer nature of “Wicked” and the world of Oz.

Grande stated that in the Emerald City, it seems like every day is a Pride celebration. She even joked that the chickens there are not straight. Furthermore, she referred to Peter Dinklage’s character Dr. Dillamond from Shiz University as a ‘gay icon.’

Some enthusiastic “Wicked” fans imagine Glinda and Elphaba as romantic partners. When prompted about the idea, Erivo replied: “I don’t see anything amiss in admiring the strong emotional tie between them. Grande expressed that they create an incredibly secure environment for each other, which is what all relationships should ideally offer. Regardless of whether it’s a romantic or platonic bond, Glinda might be somewhat secretive about her feelings, but who knows, if the right moment arises, anything could happen. Just let time unfold its mysteries.

She concluded that “it is just a true love and I think that transcends sexuality.”

In a twist of events, it seems that Grande isn’t alone in her thoughts about Glinda. When E! News shared Grande’s quote from the interview on their Instagram, Chenoweth, who first played Glinda on Broadway in “Wicked,” commented: “I thought so too, way back when…
