Argentine Lynchian Horror ‘The Dollmaker’ Acquired by Jinga Films Ahead of Cannes (EXCLUSIVE)

Based in the U.K., genre expert Jinga Films has secured international distribution rights for “The Dollmaker” (originally known as “Encantador”), a highly anticipated psychological horror film directed by José María Cicala and produced by Abril Cicala from Shock House Films, Argentina’s production company.

The movie has already been set up for release in various European regions. Lighthouse Home Entertainment has acquired the rights for Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, while Media4Fun handles distribution in Poland. Talks are ongoing for distribution deals in the U.S., UK, and Australia. Jinga aims to finalize more agreements during the Cannes Film Market, where genre films are expected to be highly sought-after by international buyers.

The movie unfolds the tale of Tomás (Rodrigo Noya), a likable young man residing in the tranquil town of Palacios, where the inhabitants are well-acquainted and there’s seldom any significant events. Despite this, Tomás conceals peculiar connections with his hidden collection of dolls at home and his mother, who is excessively reliant on him for support.

The routine in Palacios is thrown off by the arrival of Inspector Porter, who plans to take over as the town’s sole police officer, being close to retirement. After receiving concerning reports about three women gone missing, Porter launches an investigation, despite his predecessor showing no interest whatsoever.

The movie, with a David Lynch-like ambiance, combines elements of rural crime drama and intense psychological fear, inviting viewers to delve into the delicate boundary separating innocence from insanity.

In 2023, ‘The Dollmaker’ was first presented as a work in progress at Ventana Sur’s Blood Windows exhibition. The following year, it came back as a fully completed feature film. During this time, Jinga took on the role of handling its worldwide distribution.

This is the fourth project by Cicala, following “Sola,” “The Shadow of the Cat” (featuring Danny Trejo), and “Lennons.” Known for their detailed aesthetic approach and fervor for genre films, his production company, Shock House Films, has made a name for itself.
