FilmSharks recently released the initial trailer for “Death of a Comedian” (originally titled “La Muerte de un Comediante”), marking the directorial premiere of Argentine actor Diego Peretti. This movie, which both Peretti penned and stars in, completed post-production just last week and is now gearing up for distribution, with global sales managed by FilmSharks.
Rather than naming specific producers, this unique project boasts an impressive roster of 10,190 individual investors united by the Orsai Community. It sets “Death of a Comedian” apart as one of the most innovative Argentine productions in recent times. This film is brought to life by Hernán Casciari’s Orsai – an entity that functions as author, journalist, and cultural pioneer. Orsai funds all its projects through a robust community-driven crowdfunding model, with over 15,000 micro investors contributing to the cause.
The movie chronicles Juan Debré (Peretti), an actor who’s spent his career portraying heroes on TV yet never truly connected with his own self. After receiving a devastating terminal illness diagnosis, he embarks on a peculiar voyage to Belgium, the homeland of his youthful comic book hero idol, in pursuit of purpose and possibly salvation.
I’ve been captivated by the exceptional talent of Malena Villa, who truly shines in “The Wailing.” Currently, she’s making waves with her performance in Pablo Stoll’s “Summer Hit,” which was a hit at Sitges. Additionally, I can’t wait to see her alongside Javier Bardem in Rodrigo Sorogoyen’s highly-anticipated film, “The Beloved.
In collaboration with Javier Beltramino (“Rice and Matchsticks”), who is renowned for his short animation work, Peretti divides directing responsibilities. Notably, this film represents a shift in tone from Peretti’s usual comedic productions like “It’s Not You, It’s Me”, venturing into the realm of tragicomic and existential themes instead. Previously, Peretti expressed to EbMaster his desire to reinvent our perspective on everyday objects. He suggested that we should view them as a child would, encountering reality for the first time. Interestingly, he finds inspiration in the aesthetics of comic books and the surrealist painter René Magritte.
The idea conveyed in the trailer is reflected by the narration: “Life is both beautiful and mysterious…yet possibly fleeting, making it hard to fully appreciate,” as we watch a man with a bowler hat, Peretti, wander through Belgium without a bag, heading somewhere unknown.
