Arcane’s staggering $250M budget makes it most expensive animated series ever

As a seasoned gamer with a soft spot for well-crafted animated series, particularly those rooted in the gaming universe, I must say that the upcoming Season 2 of Arcane has me absolutely thrilled! The fact that it’s the most expensive animated series ever made only adds to its allure.

The animated series titled “Netflix’s Arcane” has been confirmed as the costliest animated production in history. It took a staggering $250 million to bring its 18 episodes to life.

In the realm of Riot Games’ League of Legends, Arcane has garnered tremendous success, striking a chord with viewers on Netflix and the IP alike.

As a die-hard fan, I can hardly contain my anticipation for the upcoming second season! You see, the first one was a blockbuster hit, scooping up multiple Primetime Emmys and boasting a perfect 100% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Now, with Season 2 just around the corner, the air is electric with excitement. Can’t wait to dive back in!

Yet, this achievement hasn’t been free of cost, as it’s been established that Arcane’s two seasons hold the record for being the priciest animated series ever produced.

According to Variety, it cost $250 million to create Arcane’s 18 episodes. With such a high production budget, it’s not surprising that the original plan for a five-season run was scaled back.

In response to inquiries about this astonishing price point, Marc Merrill, Riot’s co-founder and head of product development, told Variety that the team had no plans to function like a typical studio adhering to conventional deadlines.

He discussed how creating Arcane has been a learning experience for Riot moving forward.

As a devoted enthusiast, I discovered that the path to perfection demands more patience than initially anticipated. Consequently, I adjusted my self-imposed targets for development, output, and even my team, taking this newfound understanding into account.

The Riot co-founder casually confirmed that they have no qualms about the $250 million expenditure, as they believe the investment was justified for producing a game experience that our players would appreciate.

Indeed, it seems plausible considering the anticipated growth of the show’s popularity, as it appears destined to inspire a multiverse-like cinematic universe for League of Legends, complete with several upcoming spin-offs that have already been announced.

Arcane’s second and final season is set to release throughout November, 2024.

The series will start with its first three episodes being released on November 9th. Following that, you can expect the next three episodes to come out on November 16th. Lastly, the season finale will be available for viewing on November 23rd.
