Six months after its release on Netflix, the last episodes of “Arcane: League of Legends” continue to spark intense enthusiasm among fans, far from losing steam.
On May 10th, in a packed talk at Alhambra’s Gallery Nucleus (where you can currently find “Arcane” concept art along with tributes from more than 30 artists), the creative minds behind “Arcane” shared insights about the climactic final season and hinted at potential future developments for some beloved characters.
The deeply moving scenes shared by characters Jinx, played by Ella Purnell, and Vi, portrayed by Hailee Steinfeld, in the series were planned over six years ago during the initial development of “Arcane,” according to screenwriter and co-executive producer Amanda Overton.
Initially, it was planned as a single season with nine episodes. However, the climactic battle you witnessed in Season 2 was actually the end of Season 1. Following the conclusion of the writers’ room discussions, we chose to rearrange these events and turn what was originally Season 1 into Season 2. Instead, we will now devote an entire season to resolving the issues that were left unresolved in the original version, providing a resolution that was unfortunately denied to them earlier.
In the series, Jinx and Vi’s bond was a constant beacon of light. However, another relationship flourished significantly due to the expanded narrative scope of season 2: Caitlin (played by Katie Leung) and Vi. The finale of season 2 finds these two women united, having finally acknowledged their mutual feelings (and navigating numerous twists and turns during the war between Piltover and Zaun). Their relationship arc also featured a sensual love scene, which turned out to be the most-discussed moment in Netflix’s history.
Overton stated that he wanted the tension surrounding their relationship to be a significant aspect of the plot, yet not the main focus. He was growing weary of conflicts and dramas revolving around characters being gay or coming out. To eliminate this trope, they incorporated it into the show’s world-building, creating a setting where homophobia does not exist.
Barthelemy Maunoury, co-director and creative director at Fortiche Production, revealed that achieving a perfect first kiss between the characters was one of the animation team’s top priorities. “There was a lot of anticipation in the studio for this part. Animating can be time-consuming; we typically work on a fraction of a second per day. However, for this scene – the longest shot of the series at 40 seconds – we made an exception. It took our animators three months to complete, but we felt it was crucial to make it exceptional.
When queried about the potential development of Caitlin and Vi’s relationship in the “Arcane” series, Christian Linke, the showrunner, executive producer, and leader of Riot Games’ animation department, remained tight-lipped about further details.
In a captivated atmosphere filled with ardent followers, he remarked cryptically, “Indeed, it’s a challenging situation. I must remain silent on this matter due to uncertainty, though it might not be the most satisfying response for you.” This ambiguous statement, however, seemed to excite the crowd, as there have been hints that the world of “Arcane” may continue, potentially leading to a spinoff focusing on Caitlin and Vi.

Overton enthusiastically offered suggestions for the beloved duo’s next destination. “The characters in this series are quite young, around 20 or thereabouts. We haven’t witnessed Vi or Caitlin grow into adults on the screen yet. The show has been about their maturation,” she explained. “Now they can ponder, ‘Who am I when I no longer have someone to safeguard? Because throughout the series, all she did was protect others rather than herself.
Overton explained, “We haven’t delved deeply into who Vi is, her motivations, her role as a police officer, and whom she chooses to fight for and why. Is she a detective, do they make a crime-fighting team, do they venture out into the wider world and meet other heroes? That would be exciting and enjoyable. I’d love for Vi to explore more of the world.
