As a long-time fan of the League of Legends universe, I can confidently say that Arcane Season 2 has delivered yet another heart-wrenching moment that will leave viewers reaching for their tissues. The scene between Vi and Caitlyn is undeniably one of the most devastating moments in animated show history, rivaling even the tear-jerking abandonment of Powder by Vi in Season 1.
In a similar vein to when Vi left Powder, causing us to weep uncontrollably, Arcane Season 2 reportedly includes a moment that will tug at your heartstrings just as hard, as suggested by co-creator Alex Yee. Grab some tissues!
In the first season of “The Arcane,” a key moment unfolds that significantly shapes Jinx’s backstory. Prior to her life as Jinx, she was known as Powder, the last living relative by blood of Vi, following Zaun’s unsuccessful rebellion which led to the death of their mother.
In the story, Vander welcomed them, along with his adopted siblings, Mylo and Claggor. However, in Episode 3, a homemade monkey bomb belonging to Powder unfortunately led to destruction, even taking the life of Vander.
Overwhelmed by fury, Vi walked away from Powder, causing the latter to cry and call for her sister’s return. Unfortunately, before Vi could intervene, she was pulled away, enabling Silco to transform Powder into Jinx instead.
As a die-hard fan of this amazing animated series, I can’t help but feel the sting of one of the most heart-wrenching moments ever depicted on screen. Recently, I had the chance to chat with Yee and co-creator Christian Linke, and naturally, I wanted to know if there were any scenes in the upcoming chapter that would tug at my heartstrings as much as that unforgettable one did.
Before we get into it, be warned: there are spoilers ahead of Arcane Season 2 Part 1.
Although it might not quite match the raw emotion of Jinx’s origin story, Yee highlighted a conversation between Caitlyn and Vi, causing a rift in their relationship.
As a fan, I instantly thought of Caitlyn and Vi. In many aspects, it’s as if their union and promise in one particular episode was akin to an exhilarating and long-anticipated moment – a sense of relief that left me breathless.
However, there’s an equally intense feeling of disappointment and a deep divide or split between them that is truly painful to observe.
In essence, Arcane Season 2 continues directly from where Season 1 ended, delving into the repercussions of Jinx’s assault on the Council, resulting in the tragic death of Caitlyn’s mother, Cassandra.
Beyond coping with the realization that her sister was the one who took her lover’s mother’s life, Vi must also confront the harsh truth that Powder will not return.
In Episode 1 titled ‘Heavy is the Crown’, Vi consoles a distressed Caitlyn with a warm embrace, making their affection for one another evident. Yet, they are torn apart by heart-wrenching situations.
At first, both Vi and Caitlyn found themselves in agreement, with Vi expressing, “You were correct, Caitlyn. The powder is missing now. I’ll set things right. If you could convince Jayce to repair the gauntlets, I can handle this myself. No one else needs to be injured.
However, following the demise of Cassandra, Caitlyn’s objectives have shifted dramatically. “No longer will I embark on solo expeditions,” she declares, “no longer will I pursue risky strategies.
It seems my overconfidence got the best of me, taking on tasks beyond my capabilities, which unfortunately affected my mother. The authorities are pursuing Jinx, and I’ve decided to join them.
Vi is open to aiding, as Caitlyn proposes she could… by becoming an Enforcer alongside them. However, since these are the ones who took her mother’s life, it’s not surprising that Vi is taken aback by such a suggestion.
She tells Cait, “I can’t wear this,” but Caitlyn insists: “There’s a growing demand for action from the people. The Council won’t intervene. By appearing with you, we can demonstrate that not everyone in Zaun backs Jinx. We can make a statement together.
Vi expresses, “I saw them take the lives of my parents,” to which she adds, “Can you possibly imagine what it’s like?” Later, Caitlyn responds by sharing her new understanding since Cassandra passed away, saying, “Previously, I believed you were with us, but now…
Vi remarked, “It seems you didn’t consider anything,” as she departed, making both of them feel even more disheartened.
The tragedy deepens as you witness their struggles in the subsequent scenes. Vi turns to alcohol, while Caitlyn channels her distress into anger.
Regarding Linke’s analysis, he emphasized two significant scenes from the series: Firstly, the poignant part where Jinx bids farewell to Silco permanently in Episode 2, and secondly, the intense battle between Vi and Jinx in Episode 3.
He commented, “Watching Vi and Jinx engage in a battle is tough, given they’re siblings. Just how intense will their conflict become? What are the limits of their struggle?” He continued.
Nevertheless, Linke acknowledged the difficulty in surpassing the Powder sequence. “The third episode of Season 1 is quite challenging to surpass,” he explained.
It seems like we shared a very special, multi-dimensional moment just then. Moreover, Mia’s [Sinclair Jenness] acting was truly exceptional, and seeing such talent at her age is not commonplace.
Yee mentioned, “I didn’t have any guilty feelings about my actions because they seemed more like a story, until that specific instance, or at least until I heard her give that powerful performance.
At Fortiche, the animators had earlier mentioned the stress they experienced upon receiving the audio for this particular scene, along with a note saying, “Before you hear it, remember that everyone in the studio shed tears while recording it.
