Patrick Soderlund, the head of Embark Studios, shared that a neurology professor has recommended Arc Raiders undergo scientific research.
The CEO recently told IGN that Arc Raiders will offer more than just combat and collecting items. He mentioned players will be able to play musical instruments while traveling, and hinted at adding similar features. He described the game as a kind of ‘social experiment,’ suggesting it’s designed to see how players interact with each other and the world.
We’ve been really surprised by the reaction to this game,” he said. “I’ve seen a lot of people describe Arc Raiders as a sort of social experiment, and honestly, it is – and I think that’s great.”
He’s not the only one interested, though. He also mentioned that even scientists are taking notice of the game.
I was really pleased to hear a leading neurology professor tell me, after learning about the game, that I had created something truly impactful. We discussed it at dinner just three days ago, and he said he didn’t realize the extent of what I’d accomplished.
Arc Raiders boss urged to send game to be scientifically studied
The professor actually encouraged him to contact scientists and investigate the strange and fascinating ways players act, adding that…
The game has a lot of potential for exploring how people behave in intense situations. A friend suggested I partner with medical professionals to actually study the psychological and social reactions players have while playing Arc Raiders.

Arc Raiders lets players fight each other for loot, but it’s surprisingly become a cooperative game. If you play peacefully and avoid intentionally attacking others, the matchmaking system usually puts you in lobbies with friendly players.
Players often join forces with others they don’t know to defeat The Queen, then share the rewards. Sometimes, they even celebrate with music, playing instruments like flutes and guitars together.
We’ve also noticed communities forming within the game, like a group called ‘Rescue Raiders’ who help players who are struggling and protect them from aggressive players.
Soderlund acknowledged that a deep scientific study of the game might not happen, but believes this unusual aspect is a major reason for its popularity.
