Jeff Daniels is taking on a challenging role in a TV news setting once again. The 71-year-old actor, originally from Georgia, is already familiar with the streaming platform, currently appearing in Season 3 of Shrinking as Jason Segel’s father. He’s also well-versed in portraying news anchors, having previously starred in HBO’s The Newsroom as a veteran broadcaster dealing with a show overhaul and a complicated relationship with his ex-girlfriend.
Jeff Daniels, known for his Emmy-winning role as Will McAvoy in HBO’s The Newsroom, will be joining Season 5 of The Morning Show. According to Deadline, he’ll play a successful, self-made billionaire who heads a major investment company. While details are scarce, his character is expected to explore current issues such as the power of wealth in media, the gap between rich and poor, and who controls the news.
The popular drama The Morning Show features Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon as Alex Levy and Bradley Jackson, the co-hosts of a network morning news program. They frequently clash due to differences in their work and personal lives. Both actresses are also executive producers of the show, which premiered in 2019. The first season’s storyline was inspired by the 2017 firing of Matt Lauer from Today and dealt with issues surrounding the #MeToo movement.
The popular show ‘Succession,’ known for its cutthroat politics and power struggles within a major TV news network, has received 27 Emmy nominations. Billy Crudup has won the Emmy for Best Supporting Actor in a Drama Series twice – in 2020 and 2024 – for his role as network CEO Cory Ellison.

For Daniels, working on The Morning Show will be a comfortable fit, but it’s unclear how he’ll adapt to the changes within UBN’s new corporate setup. Previously, Bradley (Witherspoon) was briefly held in Minsk, accused of spying while reporting a story, but she was released after a month in jail and reunited with Alex (Aniston). At the merged UBN network, things are still complicated by a leadership struggle and the ongoing fallout from the cyberattack that happened in Season 3.
Critics gave The Morning Show a 69% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, while audiences scored it at 42% on Popcornmeter, indicating a generally mixed response. Despite this, the show has remained popular, thanks to its famous cast, visually appealing style, dramatic and unpredictable storyline, and a significant number of Emmy nominations – a total of 27.
