It’s rumored that Apple is set to unveil a new gaming app across all its devices, including iPhones and Apple TVs, which they aim to release around the same time as the Nintendo Switch 2 on June 5. The app appears to combine aspects of a game store launcher and a social platform, potentially serving as an upgrade to the current Game Center.
Based on Bloomberg’s report, Apple is planning to make a significant move aimed at attracting gamers and game developers. The anticipated app is said to include features like achievements, leaderboards, and social interactions. Interestingly, the Mac version could potentially allow for games purchased and downloaded from other platforms as well. Hints of a dedicated gaming app emerged towards the end of last year on 9to5Mac.
Apart from what we’ve already seen from Apple in terms of gaming, they recently made another move. As Digital Trends reports, Apple acquired the studio behind the hit game “Sneaky Sasquatch,” known as RAC7. This is said to be the first time Apple has ever bought a developer specializing in video games. The highly-anticipated game “Sneaky Sasquatch” is among the most favored on Apple Arcade, Apple’s subscription service for games.
Approximately five years after Epic Games, the creator of Fortnite, filed a lawsuit against Apple (and Google) regarding App Store policies that prohibited companies from receiving direct payments from users, the gaming app has now been released. Notably, Fortnite recently re-entered the US version of iOS about a week ago, marking its return to the platform after a prolonged absence of nearly half a decade.
For several years, Apple has been emphasizing its strong background in gaming, even claiming that the iPhone 15 Pro would be the top gaming console in 2023. However, last year saw the release of the iPhone 16, equipped with hardware-enhanced ray tracing and compatibility for AAA games such as Assassin’s Creed Mirage and Death Stranding.
