Anurag Kashyap Boards Venice, Busan, Mumbai Title ‘Pooja, Sir’ as Executive Producer, Channel 4 Buys for U.K. and Ireland (EXCLUSIVE)

As a film enthusiast with a keen interest in international cinema, particularly those that tackle social issues, I am thrilled to see Anurag Kashyap lending his support as executive producer for “Pooja, Sir”. Having been captivated by the raw and powerful narratives presented in films like “Gangs of Wasseypur” and “Ugly”, I am eager to witness how this film will resonate with audiences both in India and beyond.

Filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has taken on the role of executive producer for Deepak Rauniyar’s “Pooja, Sir”, and British network Channel 4 has acquired the rights to distribute this movie in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

The movie first premiered in the competition section of the Venice Film Festival’s Horizons strand earlier this year, and has since been screened at Hamburg and Busan. Upcoming is its screening at the MAMI Mumbai Film Festival. This film is based on true events that transpired in Southern Nepal during the 2015 race protests, centered around the Madhesi community. In this story, two boys are abducted in a border town of Nepal, prompting Detective Inspector Pooja to be dispatched from Kathmandu to investigate. However, upon her arrival, the escalating political turmoil and violent demonstrations cause her to deviate from her original path, leading her to collaborate with Mamata, a local Madhesi policewoman. Despite facing systemic discrimination and daily misogyny, these women persevere in their efforts to solve the case.

The main actors for this production are Asha Magrati, Dayahang Rai who is a renowned figure in Nepali cinema, Nikita Chandak, Reecha Sharma, Bijay Baral, Gaumaya Gurung, Aarti Mandal, Ghanashyam Mishra, Prameshwar Kumar Jha, Pashupati Rai, and Niraj Shrestha.

The movie was created by Rauniyar and Magrati at Aadi Films, Ram Babu Gurung at Baasuri Films, and Alan R. Milligan at Tannhauser Gate. Additionally, it received financial support from the Norwegian Film Institute’s Sorfond.

Previously, the movie was bought by ARP Sélection for France, Trigon-film for Switzerland, Germany, and Austria, The Tea Folks Films and Byankatesh Entertainment for Nepal. Now, Channel 4 owns broadcasting and on-demand rights for the United Kingdom, Ireland, the Channel Islands, and the Isle of Man. Penny Black Media manages airline and inflight distribution rights. Additionally, The Film Collaborative, based in Los Angeles, handles worldwide festival screenings and bookings.

A number of movies helmed by Kashyap have graced the screens at Cannes, such as “Kennedy” (2023), “Psycho Raman” (2016), “Ugly” (2013), “Bombay Talkies” (2013) and “Gangs of Wasseypur” (2012). Moreover, several productions under his belt have also been featured at the Croisette, including “Masaan” (2015), “The Lunchbox” (2013), “Monsoon Shootout” (2013), “The Congress” (2013) and “Udaan” (2010).

Rauniyar’s debut film, “Highway,” made its premiere at the 2012 Berlinale and was screened at Locarno, while his second feature, “White Sun,” which came out in 2016, garnered awards at the Venice, Palm Springs, Fribourg, and Singapore film festivals. He is a graduate of the Berlinale Talents program, and his short film, “Four Nights,” was shown at Berlinale Shorts in 2022.

I’m thrilled to join ‘Pooja, Sir’ with great pride. This isn’t just any film; it’s a powerful and resonant genre piece that I believe will resonate with audiences in India as well. I’ve been a fan of Deepak’s work, particularly ‘White Sun’, and have eagerly awaited his next project. Deepak and Min Bahadur Bham, director of the Berlinale title ‘Shambhala’, are two exciting voices emerging from Nepal, paving the way for the new wave of Nepali cinema.

Julieta Bowyer from Penny Black Media commented: “Deepak Rauniyar’s ‘Pooja, Sir’ reimagines a significant historical occurrence as an intimate and universally identifiable tale. By zeroing in on the human effects of these happenings, the movie delivers a profound storyline that is likely to strike a chord with global viewers.

Jeffrey Winter, joint executive director of The Film Collaborative, expressed great joy about being involved in sharing ‘Pooja, Sir’ at festivals globally. As a thought-provoking story that delicately weaves strong social justice and feminist ideas against the backdrop of a world cinema setting seldom depicted on screen, this film aligns perfectly with our purpose and the reasons we are so dedicated to cinema.

The movie is set to premiere in Nepal on March 14, 2025, and will simultaneously hit over 200 theaters across the country. This joint distribution venture is a collaboration between The Tea Folks Films and Byankatesh Entertainment.
