Renowned Indian film director Anurag Kashyap is preparing to release a Hindi adaptation of the Malayalam thriller “Footage,” featuring renowned actress Manju Warrier. The movie, which garnered significant praise in Kerala last year, will soon be screened in cinemas across the country.
This film represents the first time at the helm for experienced editor Saiju Sreedharan, who has previously worked on critically acclaimed films such as “Maheshinte Prathikaaram,” which won the Indian National Film Award, and successful movies like “Kumbalangi Nights.” Warrier stars alongside up-and-coming actors Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok in this production.
The story centers around a YouTube duo, portrayed by Nair and Ashok, as they delve into the enigma surrounding their househelp’s secretive boss, all while under lockdown due to COVID-19. Their inquiry eventually takes them to a remote island, where they encounter an unforeseen journey.
Kashyap remarks that after watching the Malayalam adaptation of ‘Footage’, it left an impression. He appreciates the movie’s unique dual-perspective narrative approach. He finds it thrilling to observe young filmmakers in the Malayalam cinema industry challenging norms by not confining themselves to a particular genre, style, or method. Instead, they are shattering stereotypes to discover fresh means of storytelling.”
Or more casually:
“Kashyap comments that ‘Footage’ in Malayalam stuck with him because of its innovative dual-perspective narrative. He’s stoked by the young filmmakers in the Malayalam industry who aren’t limiting themselves to a certain genre, style, or technique but are breaking the mold to find new ways to tell stories.
Warrier, who has been seen in “Thunivu,” “Asuran” and “Lucifer,” comments: “The film’s use of found footage style brought about an unusual and engaging narrative, as it progressed through the characters’ self-recorded videos. This approach presented a tough yet exhilarating creative process.
The upcoming Hindi film, supported by Movie Bucket and distributed by Flip Films in collaboration with Cinepolis, is a follow-up to Kashyap’s recent backing of “Tiger’s Pond,” the first Kannada movie shown at this year’s Berlinale. Notably, Flip Films has previously released critically acclaimed films such as “Kastoori” and “Eeb Allay Ooo.
Sreedharan expresses his heartfelt thanks to Anurag Kashyap sir and Cinepolis for helping us share our film with Hindi viewers,” says Sreedharan. Meanwhile, Ashok notes that having Kashyap present the movie adds credibility, as it’s considered “outstanding in terms of technique and aesthetics.” Lastly, Nair emphasizes the team’s tireless effort, referring to it as “raw dedication.
The film will release in theaters on March 7.
