An AI safety researcher previously employed by Anthropic has resigned, expressing concern about global dangers before announcing he’s leaving to study poetry and focus on creative projects.
On February 9th, Mrinank Sharma announced his resignation from the AI company on X (formerly Twitter), sharing a copy of his letter and explaining why he was leaving.
“The world is in peril”
I was really surprised to hear that Sharma’s leaving Anthropic! He sent a letter to his coworkers announcing it, and it sounds like he’s moving on after spending two years there following his PhD. It seems like he took some time to reflect on his time at the company before making the decision.
He explained that he initially joined the field because he wanted to help make AI safer, specifically by building systems to lower the possible dangers of the technology.
Sharma explained that he’d decided it was time to leave his position. In a statement, he wrote that the world is facing serious danger, not only from things like artificial intelligence and bioweapons, but from a complex web of crises happening right now.

You know, it really struck me when he talked about how tough it is to actually live by what you believe in. He’s seen it time and time again, both in himself and in the way companies and groups operate. It’s not always easy to do what’s right, even when you know what that is!
Sharma explained he’s looking to focus on work that aligns with his values. He plans to pursue a poetry degree and dedicate himself to writing, leading workshops, coaching, strengthening communities, and speaking openly and honestly – what he calls ‘courageous speech’.
Anthropic AI began in 2021, created by people who previously worked at OpenAI. More recently, in December 2025, OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, said he couldn’t envision raising his child without assistance from ChatGPT.
