Seven years since the debut of “A Simple Favor,” Stephanie Smothers and Emily Nelson reappear, their wit and sharp tongues as keen as ever. The sequel, titled “Another Simple Favor,” combines elements of a charming whodunit, a steamy psychological thriller, dark humor, and glamorous escapism against the stunning backdrop of an Italian island. Unlike its predecessor which closely followed Darcey Bell’s novel, “Another Simple Favor” was independently created by writers Jessica Scharzer and Laeta Kalogridis. This freedom allows their creativity and vision to flourish unrestrained… and that is clearly evident in the final product.
Following Emily’s imprisonment for the murder of her sister Faith, I, a passionate cinephile, have found myself diving into the world of true crime writing, with moderate achievements. However, life takes an unexpected turn when Emily reappears in my life, enlisting me as her unwilling maid of honor at her wedding to Dante Versano – the scion of an extravagantly wealthy and influential Italian mafia clan. The situation becomes increasingly ominous as Dante’s mother Portia invites Emily’s mother Margaret and aunt Linda, and Emily’s ex-husband Sean threatens to seize full custody of their son Nicky. It isn’t long before I find myself entangled in another murder case. As the body count rises and allegations swirl, I uncover a web of deceit – and it seems that even Emily may be in deeper trouble than ever before.
Another Simple Favor Is Even More Outrageous Than the First Movie
Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively’s Catty Chemistry Keeps an Improbable Story Afloat
In the sequel to “A Simple Favor,” the scandalous nature continues, as expected. Blake Lively returns to portray Stephanie and Emily, but their characters and relationships have been revamped following the events of the first film. Alongside them are familiar faces such as Andrew Rannells, Bashir Salahuddin, Ian Ho, and Henry Golding, joined by a vibrant ensemble of newcomers including Allison Janney, Michele Morrone, Alex Newell, Elena Sofia Ricci, and Elizabeth Perkins.
Janney’s dry wit and earthy charm shine brightly amidst the rapid-fire sarcasm, explosive outbursts, and covert aggression. Perkins capably fills Jean Smart’s shoes as Emily’s mother. However, despite the impressive cast lineup, some roles seem to fall short of their potential.
Characters in this story are primarily developed according to their predefined roles as victims, suspects, or others, with only a few characters given additional depth once the plot twist is revealed. The hidden mystery provides opportunities for Lively, Janney, Ricci, and Perkins to showcase their acting skills, but the only fully developed relationship is the complex back-and-forth between Stephanie and Emily, reminiscent of a darker, older version of a well-known duo. It’s refreshing to see that Anna Kendrick and Blake Lively have preserved their sharp on-screen chemistry. Lively masterfully portrays Emily’s chilling menace, while maintaining her character’s intrigue.
In a slightly different wording, here’s how you could rephrase that passage:
Kendrick truly steals the show in this film. She masterfully portrays Stephanie once more, adding maturity and self-control to her performance. Yet, the movie “Another Simple Favor” continues to be filled with subtle sexual undertones – a topic often discussed among characters. Despite Stephanie not engaging in relationships with married men or potential half-brothers this time around, Kendrick’s portrayal of her character is still rich in emotion and energy. This helps the audience accept Stephanie’s captivating misadventures, despite their imperfections.
Another Simple Favor Is Gorgeous, but Suffers From a Flimsy Plot
The Sequel Doubles Down on Glam and Goofiness With Little Mystery
While it’s entertaining to watch Emily and Stephanie engage in their free-flowing banter, at times it becomes overly witty, detracting from the relationship’s authenticity however, this dynamic softens towards the movie’s intriguing blend of Alfred Hitchcock and daytime drama conclusion. The other characters mainly deliver sarcastic remarks, plot murder or are victims themselves, which is a missed opportunity given the stellar cast.
Unlike most whodunits that keep their characters one-dimensional until the mystery unfolds, Another Simple Favor fails to dedicate sufficient time to the mystery’s unraveling. Even though the twist eventually propels the plot forward, it initially moves at a snail’s pace. Stephanie experiences one humiliation after another, and a series of misunderstandings reminiscent of an over-the-top version of North by Northwest.
The follow-up maintains an unexpected twist, remarkably linked to the happenings in “A Simple Favor.” This surprise arrives with minimal hints, reaching the level of implausibility found in soap operas or telenovelas. It appears intentional. “A Simple Favor” was characterized by its shock value, campiness, and absurdity, so it’s logical that “Another Simple Favor” amplifies this pattern. If anything, “Another Simple Favor” seems designed to surpass, outshine, and outdo the original in terms of camp and kitsch. In this regard, it has triumphed, but when it comes to crafting a compelling mystery, it falls significantly short.
In a different take, Another Simple Favor appears to prioritize its characters’ witty banter, complex friendships, and glamorous settings over crafting a well-structured mystery. Unfortunately, the story lacks depth in terms of subtle hints or less obvious suspects, which might have added more intrigue to the eventual twist.
Another Simple Favor Smooths Over Its Flaws With Dazzling Production
The Sequel Is Stylish and Visually Appealing Throughout
In the film Another Simple Favor, there’s no shortage of high-quality production elements. The camerawork, costumes, set designs, and art direction are nothing short of opulent. Approximately half of this movie focuses on showcasing the captivating atmosphere of Capri by the sea – sparkling oceans, azure waters, glistening mountains and hills, and luxurious interiors adorned with gold and crystals. Aerial shots from drones offer stunning views of picturesque cliffside landscapes, vibrant flowers and greenery, ancient ruins, terracotta structures, and modern, chic, contemporary buildings.
Emily’s costumes are striking, flamboyant, and extravagant, making a big impact as she enters Stephanie’s ordinary life. Emily’s attire often clashes with Stephanie’s and the rest of the cast, signaling her role as an outsider. Her flowing garments, characterized by their sweeping romantic designs, starkly contrast with Emily’s tailored suits, metallic details, feathers, pearls, and pointed high heels. Men in the cast are adorned with intricate patterns, paisleys, geometrics, and florals. Their clothing features low necklines, corsets, diamonds, and other elaborate, yet attention-grabbing details that may not be practical, but certainly catch the eye.
In another twist, “Another Simple Favor” swaps the vibrant neon and pastel tones of Miami for the more vivid hues and romantic floral shades of Capri, Italy. As the story unfolds, Emily and Stephanie’s color schemes mirror each other as their objectives become aligned. However, they move to opposite ends of casualness and formality when Emily seems to change her allegiance again. Stephanie dresses in practical tourist attire, while Emily transforms into a high-fashion icon. And as the bodies start piling up, bursts of red make dramatic appearances.
In its eagerness to showcase glamour, mystery, and theatricality, the film Another Simple Favor often loses sight of the story’s depth. Given the opulence of the first movie, its vibrant characters, and the modern Italian backdrop, it’s not surprising that this black comedy-mystery leans heavily towards the comical aspects, with the mystery elements serving more as a shocking spectacle. Regrettably, style takes precedence over substance in this sequel, although the style is undeniably captivating.
