As a devoted enthusiast, I’m disheartened to share the news that Steel Hunters, the exhilarating free-to-play mech extraction shooter unveiled at The Game Awards in 2024, is closing its doors just a few months after its early access debut. This heartbreaking announcement has come from the skilled developers at Wargaming.
The servers for this PC-exclusive shooter game are scheduled to close on October 8, approximately seven months following its initial release in early April. Despite the launch, it failed to attract a significant audience and peaked at 4,479 simultaneous players on SteamDB shortly after debuting. In more recent times, the player count has stayed around 250.
In simpler terms, Wargaming announced that they are ending the development of Steel Hunters due to unsustainable conditions. They understand that this is not the desired outcome and they too feel let down by this decision.
In summary, players get an additional 90 days to enjoy the game, during which all unique Hunters (including those still under development) will be unlocked, and there will be an option for hosting custom games. Wargaming also plans to organize a “farewell” tournament, with further details to be shared on their official Discord server soon.
Steel Hunters features individuals commanding colossal robots known as Hunters. Some of these robots resemble humans, whereas others take the form of large mechanical beasts akin to those from the anime series Zoids. Each robot can be tailored and upgraded with an assortment of weapons, enhancements, and skills. This game is classified as an extract-and-shoot title, where players parachute in, gather loot by combating non-player adversaries, and then try to flee, while simultaneously evading or fighting other player-controlled Hunter teams.
As a fellow gamer, I want to express my heartfelt gratitude for the energy, creativity, and dedication you’ve brought to Steel Hunters since day one of the Alpha. It’s been an incredible journey having you as part of our gaming community, and we couldn’t have asked for better companions along this adventure. We’ll deeply miss your presence and camaraderie as we move forward.
It’s possible that Steel Hunters, a game developed by Wargaming, might be closing down, however, the company continues to run multiple live-service titles. One of these games is World of Tanks, which has recently disclosed its plan to integrate tank versions of two popular ’90s gaming figures.
It’s not unusual for free-to-play, multiplayer games like Steel Hunters to have short lifespans, and it seems this trend will continue. For instance, Warhaven, a title by Nexon, ceased operation after only seven months, even before its planned console launch. Similarly, Sony’s shooter Concord lasted barely a week before servers were shut down. Recently, Electronic Arts announced they would be ending Anthem, BioWare’s live-service shooter, by January 2026.
