Dauntless, the free-to-play Monster Hunter-like from developer Phoenix Labs, will shut down May 29.
According to a concise message posted on the Dauntless X account, they’ve confirmed that no fresh content or updates will be added, and the game will become inaccessible after May 29.

“Thanks to all for being a part of the Dauntless journey,” the statement concludes.
Dauntless initially debuted on PC through the Epic Games Store and console versions in 2019, garnering attention for its more accessible approach to the monster-slaying gameplay and progression similar to Capcom’s Monster Hunter series. Additionally, it was one of the first games to offer cross-progression and cross-platform play.
Two months following its release on Steam, Dauntless was met with largely unfavorable user feedback due to the game’s revised monetization system and the controversial move to erase player advancement during the recent Awakening overhaul, which has drawn criticism from numerous players.
In just a few weeks, it’s been announced that Dauntless may soon become unplayable. This news follows the recent layoff of a large number of developers at Phoenix Labs, which itself has experienced rounds of layoffs in 2023 and 2024. Interestingly, Phoenix Labs was purchased by Forte Labs, a blockchain company, back in 2023.
In their announcement regarding the regrettable layoffs, Phoenix Labs expressed gratitude for the valuable input of each person affected. The skills, commitment, and imagination they’ve brought to our team and our projects have made a lasting impact on our company and our games.
Phoenix Labs has not disclosed specifics regarding the fate of Fae Farm, their farming simulation game set to launch in 2023. In a recent announcement concerning staff reductions at the studio, they hinted that they will reveal more about Fae Farm’s future within the next few weeks.
