‘Anora’ Director Sean Baker on Why He Chose Brit Boy Band Take That to Soundtrack the Opening Strip Club Scene: ‘It Was Like Serendipity’ (EXCLUSIVE)

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for unconventional choices and a soft spot for unexpected needle drops, I must say that Sean Baker‘s “Anora” has left me both entertained and intrigued. The opening sequence, set to the upbeat tunes of Take That’s “Greatest Day,” is a bold move that immediately captures the viewer’s attention.

In Sean Baker’s unconventional comedy about sex workers titled “Anora”, there’s a surprising musical moment that sets the tone for the entire movie.

The film titled “Anora,” recently awarded the Palme d’Or, starts off with a five-minute scene taking place in a New York strip club. In this setting, Mikey Madison’s character Ani engages in playful interactions with patrons and guides them to the VIP section at the back, where she and her coworkers offer private dance performances.

The tune picked for scoring this segment is “Greatest Day,” an inspiring pop hit by the U.K.’s beloved boy band Take That, which was actually released in 2008 following their reunion (without original member Robbie Williams). After the debut of “Anora” at Cannes, numerous film critics and writers, mainly from the UK, shared their astonishment and joy about this song selection on social media.

According to Baker, it was the song’s title that was the key ingredient.

While driving around with my wife, Sam [who is also involved in Baker’s film production], we wondered aloud if there was a song titled ‘Greatest Day’, as it seemed fitting for this special day of Ani’s,” he shared with EbMaster during a break at the London screening of ‘Anora’. “And then she searched on Spotify and found ‘Greatest Day’.

Baker openly acknowledged that he was familiar with Take That, particularly from their earlier phase before their split, which includes hits like “Back for Good” from 1995. However, their later works such as “Greatest Day” were not on his radar, a situation shared by many outside the U.K.

He expressed that he had never listened to this particular tune before. As soon as they played it in the car, it became an unshakable melody in his mind. Upon returning home, he incorporated it into the opening credits of ‘Anora’. It felt incredibly fortunate, like fate itself, the way it seamlessly fit with Mikey and synced perfectly with the kick drum’s entrance – a moment that left him exclaiming, “Oh my God!

In one of his movies, “Red Rocket,” director Baker didn’t use “Greatest Day” as the first boy band song he’s incorporated, instead opting for the N*Sync classic “Bye Bye Bye.” This song was strategically placed in the opening credits. The choice to use this song required approval from the band members, who were informed about how and when it would be utilized within the movie’s narrative – despite the sequence not featuring any explicit content akin to “Anora.

As for “The Greatest Day”, he merely mentions that they acquired the ownership rights, but fails to provide specifics.

He mentioned that Take That haven’t watched the movie as of now, and he’s eagerly anticipating the moment when they finally will!

Neon is releasing “Anora” on Oct. 18.
