As a seasoned movie critic who’s seen my fair share of films from around the globe, I must say that “Out of Control” is a captivating domestic thriller that truly stands out. The reunion of Omar Sy and Anne Le Ny, two powerhouses of French cinema, under Le Ny’s direction, promises an emotional rollercoaster ride that keeps you guessing till the end.
In 2011, actors Omar Sy and Anne Le Ny appeared together in the successful comedy “Untouchable.” Today, they are working together again in the suspenseful drama “Out of Control.” Notably, “Lupin” star Omar Sy takes on a significant role alongside Elodie Bouchez (“All Your Faces,” “The Dreamlife of Angels”), José Garcia (“Totems,” “The Ax”), and Vanessa Paradis (“Knife + Heart,” “Café de Flore”). Interestingly, Anne Le Ny not only stars in the film but also co-writes it with Axella Cachman.
13 years after our initial connection, a strong bond and warmth that had been dormant resurfaced between us, as easily as if no time had passed, shares Le Ny. She worked alongside Matt Damon in “Stillwater” and received recognition for her first directorial and screenwriting success with the film “Those Who Remain,” released in 2008.
In her debut as a director, titled “Out of Control (It’s Just That You Love Me)”, premieres in the official competition at the Tallinn Black Nights Film Festival on November 16th. This production is a collaborative effort between Move Movie, led by Bruno Levy, and Korokoro, Sy’s production company, alongside France 2 Cinéma and La Compagnie Cinématographique & Panache Productions. The project receives financial support from Canal+, Disney+, and France Televisions. M6 Group’s SND is responsible for worldwide sales and distribution within France, which is scheduled for February 19th, 2025.
Le Ny is overjoyed to have been chosen for the primary event and to visit Tallinn. As a devoted admirer, Le Ny particularly appreciates Baltic German novelist Eduard von Keyserling, known for his works set in the historic area of Courland,” Le Ny expresses excitedly.
In “Out of Control,” she delves once more into the gripping world of thrillers, a genre initially tasted with “Le Torrent” featuring Garcia. “I was eager to examine it from a slightly new perspective, introducing drama and suspense that unexpectedly disrupts an ordinary family’s life.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself captivated by the film where Sy portrays Julien, a school counselor and family man with a wife, Marie (Bouchez), and two kids. However, when Julien’s past love, Anaëlle (Paradis), reappears in town, Marie, feeling insecure about our 15-year long marriage, starts to seek solace in her charismatic boss, Thomas (Garcia). Yet, what she believed would be a fleeting affair with Thomas, spirals into an alarming obsession for him.
In my perspective, this story delves into the realm of psychological suspense, exploring themes such as manipulation and deception, yet it’s centered around an enduring love,” I explain. “You’ll often find narratives on screen that focus on the beginning or the demise of love, but seldom do we see stories about the heart of a long-term relationship – the ‘middle’ of love, if you will. This tale poses a thought-provoking question: What remains of love in a 15-year marriage when it seems more like a business partnership? The narrative unfolds in a unique way, as the couple discuss mundane issues like laundry and heating problems. I aimed to make everyday chores significant, using them as the foundation, just like organic matter in a painting.
To enhance the content of her movie, the director drew inspiration from well-known films focusing on marriage – such as Ingmar Bergman’s “Scenes from a Marriage,” Woody Allen’s “Husbands and Wives,” and Noah Baumbach’s “Marriage Story.” Additionally, she looked to Adrian Lyne’s thriller “Fatal Attraction” for its exploration of intense obsession.
Le Ny notes that ‘Fatal Attraction’ is an engaging suspense thriller with elements of suspense, but it relies on stereotypical gender portrayals. In the film, Anne Archer plays Michael Douglas’s housewife character, while Glenn Close portrays the independent yet unstable lover. Le Ny proposes a twist to this narrative: instead of Sy being the cheating husband, he envisions a scenario where Sy is the one being deceived and must support his wife.
One of the factors that led Sy to join the project, as mentioned by Le Ny, was the exploration of marriage. “Omar is in a long-term marriage, which isn’t typical within our field,” she emphasized, smiling. “He was drawn to his character because he found it endearing that Julien’s occupation as a school counselor involves mending things. Simultaneously, Julien is quite romantic; he’s never truly recovered from his first love, yet he’s managed to move forward and is content with Marie.
In order to play his complex character, Sy went beyond the surface, drawing from deep within himself, seeking out subtle qualities rather than leaning on his innate charisma and exuberance. It was a pleasure collaborating with him, according to Le Ny.
As a character actor, Le Ny commends the performances of his three fellow actors. Garcia portrayed Thomas as a captivating narcissist pervert who was sincere and believable. The director teasingly wonders aloud about anyone wanting Vanessa Paradis as their ex-spouse. Lastly, Bouchez brought a delicate balance of sensitivity, vulnerability, and inner strength to his character, which grew over the course of the film.
Fundamentally, Le Ny believes that beneath its thriller elements, “Out of Control” tells a powerful tale of resilience. The primary female character, who was initially attracted to her boss, eventually manages to distance herself once she understands his quirks. According to Le Ny, the story aims to demonstrate that it is indeed possible to stand up against one’s oppressor.
Filming occurred in Vannes city and its environs, which is one of the director’s favorite locations in France, known as Brittany. The team and the four principal actors were delightful individuals, each unique off-screen, making our experience enjoyable despite a rainy shoot and three massive storms. This is according to Le Ny’s comments.
The film ‘Out of Control’ is set to compete for a €20,000 ($21,300) grand prize at an upcoming event in Tallinn. The award ceremony will take place on the final night of the festival, which falls on November 23rd.
