Andy Muschietti, the creator of It: Welcome to Derry, shared that the most gruesome scene in Episode 4 has a hidden meaning and directly connects to the events of the Season 1 finale. Be warned: this explanation contains spoilers!
The latest episode of the horror series revealed a lot about Pennywise’s past, even though Bill Skarsgard’s clown hasn’t been shown much yet. Despite this, the show is well-written and doesn’t feel incomplete. We still feel Pennywise’s impact through the terrifying violence happening in the town.
Episode 4 of ‘It: Welcome to Derry’ featured a disturbing scene where Marge Trueman (Matilda Lawler) experienced a frightening hallucination, seeing her eyes bulge before attempting to cut them out while in class. This intense moment was subtly hinted at earlier in the episode when the class watched a documentary about parasitic worms that cause snails’ eyes to protrude.
The scene is disturbing, particularly because Lily (Clara Stack) is seen taking a chisel from Marge to prevent further injury, but her classmates mistakenly believe Lily was the attacker. Director Andy Muschietti has shared that the finale will delve deeper into this violent moment.
Andy Muschietti says Marge’s fear of eyes goes “deeper” than just wearing glasses

During a discussion about the dramatic scene, director Muschietti revealed that Marge’s oversized glasses aren’t simply a matter of needing vision correction – there’s a deeper meaning behind them.
The reason she’s wearing those Coke bottle glasses won’t be explained until the final episode, and it’s connected to a fear involving her eyes, according to a recent interview with TV Insider.
Matilda Lawler, who portrays Marge, revealed that she feels self-conscious about her glasses, and that’s why the character is targeted in that way.
She struggles with a lot of insecurities, and her glasses are a big one. It was really empowering, especially as a teenage girl, to be able to express those feelings and confront what makes Marge feel insecure.

The young actor explained that the experience helps Marge feel grounded and reminds her that she’s where she belongs – with her friend Lilly and the group known as the ‘Losers.’
So, episode 4 of ‘Welcome to Derry’ really blew my mind! It turns out Pennywise isn’t just in Derry, he’s stuck there! Apparently, the Native American tribe who first dealt with It used pieces of the meteorite it landed in to build a kind of barrier around the land, and that’s how Derry came to be – and how It got trapped!
Even though some questions have been answered, Muschietti is still keeping Pennywise’s backstory a secret, suggesting more will be revealed later.
