Although Andrew Garfield has acted in fewer Spider-Man films compared to his successor Tom Holland, he remains a beloved Spidey for many. The thunderous reception he received when he returned in “Spider-Man: No Way Home” is a testament to this fact, with audiences worldwide giving him a rousing applause.
For quite some time now, there’s been speculation about whether Garfield will reprise his role as the Amazing Spider-Man within the MCU. Given that Tom Holland is currently holding the mantle, it’s not impossible for him to encounter his counterpart again. Notably, the MCU is heavily focused on multiversal storylines at present. Garfield was asked about this possibility during a recent visit to the Middle East Film and Comic Con in Abu Dhabi.
As a movie enthusiast, I couldn’t help but cherish the moments when I slipped into the webslinger’s suit as Spider-Man. Yet, if given another chance to reprise this iconic role, I’d yearn for a twist. “I’m open to stepping back into the character again somehow,” I mused, “but I believe it would need to be quite bizarre.
Indeed, there’s a character in the Marvel Cinematic Universe who focuses extensively on the mystical, going by the name of Doctor Strange. However, it seems that’s not the character Andrew Garfield might have been hinting at, given that Doctor Strange was part of Spider-Man: No Way Home.
Garfield expressed a desire for something distinct, unconventional, and unexpected, similar to the creative liberty found in the animated Spider-Verse films. He believes these movies are exceptional because they allow for the character to be respected in numerous ways across various universes.
If someone were to ask Garfield about lending his voice for a Spider-Verse film, it appears he would likely agree, given the vast expanse of the Spider-Verse where he could make an appearance. In fact, it’s not impossible to imagine him showing up in movies like Avengers: Doomsday or Avengers: Secret Wars. Although his name isn’t on the cast list for the MCU, it’s not unheard of for his presence to be kept under wraps.
Garfield Found No Way Home “Healing”
In an interview with a magazine in 2024, Garfield reflected on the sense of closure he experienced after watching No Way Home. He admitted that not being able to make a third Amazing Spider-Man film left him feeling disappointed. The critical failure of The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which wrote off Emma Stone’s character, Gwen Stacy, was particularly disheartening for him.
Garfield expressed that he would definitely return if the opportunity aligned with the culture or presented something novel, quirky, and thrilling – something truly engaging. He admires the character and finds it brings happiness. If his presence contributes to your joy, then he is equally happy in response.
Each time Garfield speaks affectionately about it, there seems to be a growing sense that we might see him wearing the Spider-Man costume once more.
