As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for behind-the-scenes tales, I must admit that the anecdote surrounding Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh’s impromptu performance during the filming of “We Live in Time” has left me quite amused. The fact that they managed to carry on a passionate scene without realizing the director had called ‘cut’, resulting in their rather embarrassed cameraman turning away, is a testament to the chemistry between the two actors and their ability to immerse themselves fully into their roles.
In the upcoming romantic movie “We Live in Time”, stars Andrew Garfield and Florence Pugh play a married couple, necessitating them to shoot some passionate scenes – one particular scene reportedly became somewhat overzealous.
Last Friday evening in New York City, during an interview on the “Happy Sad Confused” podcast with host Josh Horowitz, Garfield shared a story about a filming incident when he and Pugh didn’t realize their director of photography had called “cut.” They continued working unaware, leading to such intensity that the cameraman eventually halted recording and walked away.
During our discussion, Andrew Garfield revealed that we filmed the initial take for an extremely intimate and passionate sex scene. It was a private set, meaning only me, Florence, and the camera operator, who goes by Stewart (our DP), were present. The scene heated up, and we had rehearsed it, getting fully immersed in the moment. We went beyond what was planned because we didn’t hear ‘cut,’ and since it felt safe, we decided to move forward, allowing the scene to evolve naturally.
After some time, Garfield remarked that he and Pugh seemed to be mentally communicating, “It seems this shot is taking longer than usual.” Later, Garfield stepped forward before the spectators to demonstrate the moment when they paused the scene.
Garfield glanced overhead and there, in the corner, were Stewart and our camera operator,” Garfield joked, drawing chuckles from the audience. “Stewart was holding the camera by his side and had moved himself against the wall.
Under the direction of John Crowley, the film titled “We Live in Time” chronicles the romance between Almut (Pugh), an aspiring chef, and Tobias (Garfield), a recent divorcee, across several decades. After an unexpected meeting, they find themselves falling in love. The movie’s synopsis reads: “The story unfolds through glimpses of their life together – their initial attraction, creating a home, starting a family – yet reveals a harsh truth that shakes their bond to its core. As they navigate a journey complicated by time constraints, they come to appreciate every moment in the unique course their love story has taken.
The film titled “We Live in Time” was first shown at the Toronto International Film Festival in September and is scheduled for a limited screening in U.S. cinemas starting October 11, distributed by A24. Its debut in the U.K. will occur on January 1 through Studiocanal.
Garfield’s full “Happy Sad Confused” interview will release soon.
