As I reflect upon the life of Andras Hamori, a truly remarkable figure in the world of film and television, I find myself in awe of his resilience, determination, and unwavering passion for storytelling. Born and raised in Budapest, he embarked on an extraordinary journey that took him from the heart of Europe to the bustling streets of Toronto and finally to the glamorous city of Los Angeles.
71-year-old Hungarian film and TV producer Andras Hamori, known for producing movies like “Crash” and “Sunshine,” as well as the show “The Gate,” passed away on September 2.
During the late ’90s and early 2000s, Hamori worked on films such as “The Sweet Hereafter,” “eXistenZ,” “Max,” “Owning Mahowny” and “Formula 51.” From 1991-1993, he was the producer for all episodes of “Tropical Heat,” totaling 66 in number. In 2014, Hamori produced the History Channel miniseries “Houdini,” which starred Adrien Brody.
Originating as a movie critic and short filmmaker in the 1970s Budapest, Hamori was initially inspired by Hungarian-Canadian theater director John Hirsch to pursue his film-making aspirations in North America. In 1981, Hamori traveled to Toronto with one of his short films, setting up temporary residence in Hirsch’s basement.
Hamori initially found success collaborating with Hungarian peer Robert Lantos, subsequently rising to a partnership position at Alliance Entertainment – a prominent Canadian film and TV manufacturer and supplier active between 1984 and 2013. Later on, he shifted base to Los Angeles, establishing his own production company, H2O Motion Pictures.
According to his official obituary, Hamori viewed himself as a part of the lineage of filmmakers such as Hungary’s Alexander Korda. He was attracted to distinctive, imaginative narratives with a literary flair, which could maintain the enthusiasm necessary to guide them through the lengthy stages of development, funding, and production. In addition, Hamori had a playful side, enjoying the occasional self-appearance in his own productions.
Hamori is survived by his three children, Chloe, Ben and Jake.
