Anderson .Paak on Directing His Son in ‘K-Pops!’ and His Future With Bruno Mars: ‘Silk Sonic Always Has a Place to Put Out More Music’

As a movie enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional narratives, I find Anderson .Paak‘s foray into filmmaking with “K-Pops!” truly captivating. His unique blend of personal experiences, such as his relationship with his son Soul Rasheed, and his diverse professional portfolio make for an intriguing cocktail that promises a compelling cinematic journey.

At the Toronto Film Festival, Anderson .Paak confidently entered EbMaster studio, his face beaming with a broad grin. Even before the cameras started recording, he was already twirling a pillow on his finger as if it were a basketball.

“This is a couch potato trick,” he laughed, as his 13-year-old son Soul Rasheed watched in awe.

It’s only natural that .Paak never seems to rest his hands, given his vibrant music career spanning both solo work and the four-time Grammy winning duo Silk Sonic. Additionally, he has a profitable persona as DJ Pee Wee, and an unofficial but active role as a restaurant owner. As such, it’s safe to say that .Paak is always expanding his list of accomplishments.

The most recent project is “K-Pops!”, the first movie that Anderson .Paak directed and starred in with Rasheed.

At times, it was challenging for me to switch roles from being a father to being a director,” the 38-year-old multi-talented individual shared with EbMaster. “I found it tough to separate my duties because I wanted to ensure he felt at ease as my child, but also capture the best performance possible – so we could both enjoy the end result and feel proud of our work.

Rasheed agreed, “My father was the one, so he understood my likes, dislikes, and abilities. This is Paak, who portrays my father in the movie, and our relationship feels genuine because of it.

In “K-Pops!,” .Paak portrays BJ, an ex-musician who journeys to South Korea for a pop idol competition. There, he encounters Tae Young (Rasheed), a hopeful contestant vying to be the nation’s next big star. As fate would have it, when BJ meets Tae’s mother, he discovers they shared a past romance over a decade ago, and Tae is actually the son BJ never knew existed.

According to Paak, it was his son who sparked the idea for [‘K-Pops!’].” He penned most of the movie during the pandemic when live music stopped and he found himself back home with his family. “My house was filled with K-pop at that moment, and BTS was always playing. That’s when I asked: ‘You may know about BTS, but what do you know about BET?’

Initially, the father-and-son team began making YouTube skits, which served as a platform for .Paak to recognize Rasheed’s “incredible acting talent” in a natural way.

According to Paak, he had expressed, ‘Son, I’ve got this movie idea that could be quite humorous,’. He recalled. ‘I felt so strongly about it that I wanted to direct it myself, as I didn’t want anyone else to portray my son except for my own child, and I desired his presence alongside me.’

Regarding Rasheed, he admitted that he had no passion for acting at all prior to the filming process. As .Paak adjusted his suit collar, he added, “I never really considered myself an actor before we started shooting. However, once we began filming, I found a small spark within me and thought, ‘Perhaps I do have some potential.’

The movie features Yvette Nicole Brown, Jee Young Han, and Jonnie “Dumbfoundead” Park as well. Rasheed, with some guidance from his father, recounts running into several famous personalities at TIFF, namely Salma Hayek, Don Cheadle, and Selena Gomez.

Musically, .Paak has been quite active lately with collaborations such as those with Fred Again, Cordae, and Gwen Stefani. Together, they performed the anthem for the 2024 Olympics. Additionally, he teamed up with Knxwledge earlier this year to put out their second album under the name NxWorries, eight years since their first album “Yes Lawd!” was warmly received by fans.

Inquired about the possibility of another Silk Sonic album, .Paak mentioned that he had recently spent time with Bruno Mars and made an appearance during one of his performances.

Paak expressed his belief that Silk Sonic will continue to produce music, as they always have a platform for doing so. He added, ‘Time will reveal what happens.’ So, we’ll wait and see.

It seems that Silk Sonic won’t be retiring even after they received four Grammy nominations and potentially took home all the awards.

“Nah,” .Paak said, flashing that signature smile.
