Isn’t it delightfully nostalgic to see the return of “And Just Like That…” this week? It seems the focus on Carrie Bradshaw and her extensive shoe collection is causing quite a stir, as if that was ever a surprise! After all, they even reference one of my favorite “Sex and the City” episodes, “A Woman’s Right to Shoes,” which clearly shows they have a solid grasp of their audience’s preferences. Admittedly, I might be biased due to the lingering trauma from Aidan Shaw’s storyline, but any diversion from Virginia, no matter how absurd, is welcome in my book. And let’s not forget the shoe montage! Who could possibly dislike a scene dedicated to footwear?
1. Carrie’s constant use of high-heels is causing her downstairs neighbor, Duncan Reeves – a well-known historical biographer from London who spends six months in New York each year and resides on the first floor for work – immense frustration. At first, he complains about the noise to Carrie, explaining his need for silence during late hours and extended daytime sleep. However, it appears that Duncan himself is often working during the day, leading one to wonder if he’s merely being overly sensitive or perhaps just a bit of a whiner. (Having lived above a New York City restaurant that turned into a nightclub, I can sympathize with his struggles.)
2. Despite finding Duncan’s grumpiness amusing and his refusal to be charmed by Carrie Bradshaw intriguing, it’s clear that her use of high-heels is causing him distress. While it’s true that Carrie’s lifestyle isn’t particularly boisterous, one might question whether she’s truly unaware of how to walk without heels, given the intensity of the situation.
In an attempt to reconcile, Carrie presents Duncan a delightful gift basket, while he tries to express his apologies with a pair of “nursing home slippers” he purchased online. However, she informs him that she’s allergic and refuses the present. To put it mildly, they are not attractive at all. Men, it might be wise to avoid buying footwear for women you aren’t familiar with. Furthermore, perhaps you should consider a quality white noise machine instead, Duncan. It’s 2025 after all, and many of us are using them. Exchanging gifts like this only complicates matters further.
Carrie responds by stepping outside to enlist runners to manage the noise and scold her friends upon entering. This approach seems out of character for Carrie, as she’s typically assertive, especially when it comes to relationships like the one with Aidan. However, it’s time for you to stand up to your neighbors, but remember, you own that house! Consider adding rugs and perhaps implement a shoe-free policy, but don’t let this man push you around!
In this particular episode, it’s quite reminiscent of Carrie Bradshaw’s predicament, isn’t it? The way Miranda’s housing struggles mirror hers. Miranda is dealing with a noisy neighbor from hell in her Airbnb, a heavy metal enthusiast who plays his music round the clock. Now, this is definitely something that could make anyone lose their cool! She tries to communicate peacefully by leaving a note under the door, but it backfires when she encounters an elderly gentleman, stark naked and brandishing a meat cleaver, threatening her if she disturbs him again. Clearly, it’s not an ideal living situation. Despite both women valuing their personal space, they’ve resisted having Miranda move in with Carrie due to this very reason. However, given that neither of them has found a suitable apartment yet, there seems to be no other solution for the time being.
In this living arrangement, everything seems remarkably managed. One might be inclined to label them as challenging roommates, given their peculiarities: Carrie, persistently donning heels even at home, expects Miranda to remove her footwear. Miranda, on the other hand, casually helps herself to food from the refrigerator and hasn’t shown any inclination towards grocery shopping yet. Carrie’s subtle aggression over the last yogurt, banana, and Mexican soda is almost unbearable to witness. Tensions escalate quickly when Carrie unexpectedly encounters a bare Miranda wandering the corridors in the dead of night.
Carrie invites Seema to check out the table (that Aidan secretly purchased for her), where Miranda is working on her research with scattered papers, notes, and Carrie’s last Mexican Coke. Their interaction becomes tense as they both try to tidy up the cluttered table, leading to an accident where Carrie spills the coke onto Miranda’s computer. Despite the mess, they acknowledge that their current living arrangement isn’t suitable for either of them and agree it’s time for more personal space. This incident marks a significant moment as Carrie decides to combine her friendship with Miranda and her professional role by asking Seema to help Miranda find a new apartment. This action showcases the authenticity of their long-lasting bond, making the scene both relatable and a touching tribute to their friendship.
In their recent encounter, Carrie helps Duncan resolve his kitchen fire issue, which was caused by unnoticed smoke due to his headphones. As a goodwill gesture, they go out for dinner together. The conversation between them flows smoothly, and it appears that both might be beneficial to each other professionally – Duncan is apprehensive about writing a biography on Margaret Thatcher, while Carrie is hesitant about delving into historical fiction. It seems like they could assist one another in their respective fields. Moreover, when Carrie returns home from the dinner, she removes her heels to avoid disturbing her neighbor. Could this indicate something more developing between them? For now, I’ll be supporting anyone other than Aidan.
Despite finding Carrie and Miranda’s friendship captivating, there was a moment of camaraderie that unexpectedly touched my heart. As several perceptive viewers predicted, Harry Goldenblatt’s health issues run deeper than his comedic mishaps suggest; he is battling prostate cancer. This revelation comes during an evening walk with Charlotte, where she learns the news and reacts as any wife deeply in love with her husband might: with profound sadness. To ease her worries, Harry assures her that they caught the disease early and it’s highly treatable, implying he will be alright. He gently declines Charlotte’s offer to quit work to care for him, preferring to maintain as much normalcy as possible during treatment. However, he requests that they keep this news private; he doesn’t want the sympathy often associated with cancer. While his wish for secrecy may seem reasonable, it’s likely unsustainable given their circumstances — they will undoubtedly need support during this challenging time.
The incident with Harry occurs at a time when the Goldenblatts are scheduled for a glamping trip at Governor’s Island with the Wexleys. Charlotte’s children, who are known for their mischief, were already trying to wriggle out of it before it began, and Charlotte was making every effort to ensure this outing would be enjoyable for Harry. It didn’t take long for Harry to join in the complaints, and when Charlotte discovered all three of them engrossed in screens inside the tent, neglecting their family time together, she felt her temper rise, Lily Goldenblatt, you thoughtless teenager, and decided to take a stroll to prevent herself from losing her cool.
During their family vacation, Lisa also feels overwhelmed and desires some personal space from her family, particularly her partner Herbert. Their continuous arguments stemming from misunderstandings and failing to listen to each other suggest a discord between them that may hint at deeper issues in their marriage.
On the trip, Lisa encounters Charlotte contemplating life by New York Harbor, and they later visit a spa together. Here, Lisa confesses her growing feelings for Marion, her editor, which might not be as trivial as she assumes. These incidents could potentially indicate underlying troubles within Lisa’s relationship with Herbert.
For now, what matters most is what unfolds next. Lisa observes that Charlotte appears to be dealing with something heavy, yet when she inquires, Charlotte declines to discuss it. Of course, we understand that Charlotte yearns to speak about it, but finds herself unable. Lisa too senses this, and instead of pressing the issue, she simply stands by her friend, offering comfort by gently massaging her back, signaling her presence whenever Charlotte is ready. I must admit, the scene was exceptionally heartwarming! To be sure, the bond between Charlotte and Lisa in And Just Like That… is one of its most commendable aspects. Perhaps the sense of nostalgia in this episode wasn’t only about the shoes, but also about delving into female friendship dynamics once more. After all, weren’t those relationships the core essence of Sex and the City, in the end?
This and That
Seema encounters an obstacle in venturing independently as she’s turned down for a business loan to cover the cost of office space she desires. She feels upset, but consents to take on Miranda as a client while building her brokerage, and they might prove to be an entertaining duo.
• Once more, Seema bumps into Adam the Gardener at Carrie’s place, and their playful banter continues to be enjoyable. When might these two start dating, and is there a chance they’ll do so in an unconventional location like a tree?
Regardless of the extent of Duncan’s aid for Carrie on her novel, the parts narrated through voice-overs are truly awful. Yet, it looks set to become a runaway success.
I can tell Charlotte adores Harry quite a bit, given how excitedly she shared that he’s been immersed in Duncan’s biography about Henry VIII for an impressive five years. Her obvious pride was evident!
