As a movie enthusiast who has spent countless hours rewinding VHS tapes of 90s classics like “Anaconda” and “Jumanji,” the news about Jack Black and Paul Rudd potentially starring in a new, comedic take on the iconic snake-filled adventure has me absolutely thrilled! The idea of these two hilarious actors playing midlife crisis-stricken friends remaking their favorite movie while accidentally getting entangled in real-life danger is just too good to resist.
Jack Black and Paul Rudd are considering taking on roles for Columbia Pictures’ updated version of “Anaconda,” a project helmed by screenwriter-director Tom Gormican.
I’m thrilled to share that I’m part of the team bringing the iconic “Anaconda” back to life! As one of the writers along with Kevin Etten, I’ll be working alongside Gormican, known for his work on “The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent” and “Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F,” who will also direct. We’re planning a comedic take on this classic serpentine tale, promising an exciting twist for the original fans and new viewers alike!
I’m not entirely clear about the specifics of this project, but it doesn’t seem to be a reboot of the 1997 movie “Anaconda.” In that original film, a team from National Geographic found themselves in danger when they were taken hostage by a psychotic hunter, played by Jon Voight. His objective was to capture the world’s largest and most deadly snake. The stars included Jennifer Lopez, Owen Wilson, and Ice Cube. This thriller turned out to be a surprise success, grossing $136 million worldwide and inspiring four follow-up films.
Gormican’s movie seems to be adopting a self-referential approach. According to recent reports, it centers around a group of friends grappling with midlife issues and deciding to reprise their favorite film from their past. However, as they venture into the jungle, the situation escalates rapidly. As of now, it’s unclear who Black and Rudd will portray, but among the main characters, there is a director who works part-time as a wedding videographer and an actor whose greatest achievement was a role on a police drama.
Brad Fuller and Andrew Form’s production company, Fully Formed, is working on a project that has been under development for quite some time. This week, it was exclusively revealed by EbMaster that Form (the producer of the entire “A Quiet Place” series) signed a first-look deal with Sony’s division, Screen Gems. Notably, Black and Rudd have strong ties to Sony due to their successful work on the “Jumanji” and “Ghostbusters” franchises respectively.
1. Black is represented by Sloane Offer and Ocean Avenue, while Rudd is represented by UTA and Lighthouse Management. In turn, Gormican is represented by CAA and 3 Arts Entertainment.
There was no response from the studio regarding the recent casting updates, which were initially shared by Deadline and The Hollywood Reporter.
