An Unexpected Platform Was More Popular For Streaming Than Netflix And All The Rest In June

As someone who grew up in the digital age, I can’t help but marvel at the meteoric rise of YouTube as a dominant force in both our mobile and living room viewing experiences. It feels like just yesterday when YouTube was a quirky video-sharing platform where people posted funny cat videos and DIY tutorials.

Approximately two decades have passed since YouTube’s inception, and this once primarily screen-bound platform has expanded its reach into living rooms as well. In June alone, YouTube claimed nearly a tenth of all TV viewing hours, outpacing competitors like Netflix, Hulu, and Disney+.

In June 2021, YouTube accounted for 9.9% of the total streaming viewership on TVs in the US, both connected and traditional, according to Nielsen’s The Gauge. Netflix followed closely with a 8.4% share. This is an increase from their respective shares of 9.7% and 7.9% in the previous month. All streaming services saw an approximate 40% rise in viewership collectively.

Approximately 1 out of every 10 minutes spent watching television is now on YouTube, marking an increase from 9.7% in the previous month. This represents the largest single-platform share in TV viewing history, according to Nielsen’s records.

Tara Walpert Levy, YouTube’s vice president of Americas, expressed her surprise in an interview with CNBC. She remarked that many people underestimated YouTube’s impact on their daily lives and viewing habits, both on mobile devices and large screens at home. When Nielsen reported that YouTube had surpassed other streaming platforms in overall viewership, even for non-advertising platforms, Walpert Levy was taken aback. Her industry peers shared her astonishment, as the growth of YouTube’s presence had surpassed expectations.

I was thrilled to learn earlier this year that over a billion hours of YouTube content are being watched daily on TV screens. And here’s an amazing statistic: around 150 million Americans tune in to YouTube on their connected TVs every month! Isn’t it incredible how much engaging content YouTube provides for us on the big screen?

YouTube was launched in 2005, and less than two years after that, it was purchased by Google for a hefty price tag of $1.65 billion. Since then, it has grown into a prominent platform where many well-known content creators, often referred to as “YouTubers,” establish their bases and begin their creative journeys.
