An Oregon Trail Film Adaptation Currently In "Early Development" At Apple

As a gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I must admit I was taken aback by the news that Apple is developing a film adaptation of the iconic Oregon Trail game. Growing up, this game was a staple in American schools and a rite of passage for any child who dared to venture into the world of gaming during the 90s. The phrase “You have died of dysentery” echoed through the halls of classrooms across America, a grim reminder of our collective fate as we navigated the treacherous Oregon Trail.

Ever since Apple TV+ hit the streaming scene in November 2019, I’ve been blown away by their original film and television content! From the Emmy-winning series like Ted Lasso and Slow Horses to Oscar-nominated movies such as Killer of the Flower Moon and CODA – which took home a few statuettes at the 2022 Oscars, I must add.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’m super excited about some upcoming movie releases, and one of them is based on the classic Oregon Trail video game! This intriguing tidbit was dropped by The Hollywood Reporter (THR), revealing that the Oregon Trail film adaptation is currently in its initial stages at a streaming service. Can’t wait to see how they bring this iconic gaming experience to life on the big screen!

Prepare your carts and cattle, as you’re about to cross a river: The much-loved elementary school computer game Oregon Trail is being adapted into a film. According to reports, the movie will incorporate a few original songs reminiscent of Barbie musical style.

According to THR’s initial reports, Will Speck and Josh Gordon are set to direct and produce a project, with Benj Pasek and Justin Paul on board as composers and lyricists. They will be producing the original music for the project through their production company, Ampersand.

Back in the day, I got hooked on this legendary gaming series called Oregon Trail. It all started way back in ’71 on those old minicomputers, but its latest installment was exclusively dropped on Apple Arcade in 2021. By next year, it’ll be available on consoles and PCs as well.

Additionally, The Hollywood Reporter found out that the rights to the Oregon Trail video game series are owned by American publishing company HarperCollins. They’ve been collaborating with Apple to create a film adaptation. It’s possible that this movie will be produced under the HarperCollins Productions label, and Caroline Fraser and Kevin K. Vafi have been confirmed as producers for this project by The Hollywood Reporter.
