Warning: This article contains SPOILERS for The Boys season 5 finale, “Blood and Bone.”
It’s been a week since the finale of The Boys, and viewers still have strong opinions about how it ended – many are criticizing the writing and how the story unfolded. However, there’s widespread agreement that the actors were fantastic throughout season 5, delivering consistently strong performances.
The actors in The Boys – from the main characters to the guest stars – all delivered fantastic performances, solidifying the cast as one of the show’s greatest assets. The series wouldn’t have been nearly as successful without such strong acting, and one performer particularly shone this season.
As a huge fan of The Boys, I’ve been consistently blown away by Antony Starr’s performance as Homelander since the very beginning. He’s just gotten better and better at capturing all the little details – the way Homelander moves, his unique personality – that make him such a compelling villain. Honestly, I think he was crucial to making Homelander’s arc in season 5 so impactful and giving the character the ending it deserved.
Throughout the series, Antony Starr has brilliantly portrayed Homelander as both frightening and surprisingly fragile. The finale especially highlighted his acting skills, as he convincingly showed the villain’s desperate need for control and adoration. Then, he completely changed his approach when Homelander lost his powers, delivering a remarkably different performance.
Throughout the five seasons of The Boys, Homelander was a seemingly invincible enemy. Seeing him reduced to a desperate, pleading figure was a striking change, and arguably the most satisfying character arc in season five. Antony Starr’s incredible performance was key to making Homelander’s final scene so memorable.
It’s surprising that Antony Starr hasn’t won an Emmy, considering his consistently excellent performances and the popularity of The Boys, particularly his work in season 5. He’s truly deserving of recognition now.
Antony Starr Is Long Overdue An Emmy For His Homelander Performance
Antony Starr’s performance as Homelander in season 5 might be his strongest yet, but even if it isn’t, his work on the show over the years deserves an Emmy. We’ve seen his character transform from a flawed and self-centered hero into a truly unhinged and power-obsessed leader.
While it might not seem like a huge change, Starr has done an incredible job developing the Homelander character. The Homelander from season one, despite being a villain, came across as relatively put-together and confident, which explains why he was chosen to be the public face of the Seven.
Sometimes, he even seems like an ordinary person, like during the first real meeting with the Seven when Starlight joins. But as the story progresses, his flaws and vulnerabilities are becoming more apparent. He’s less concerned with public image and increasingly driven to achieve his objectives, no matter the cost.
The show has delivered both powerful speeches and shocking violence, alongside surprisingly honest and vulnerable moments. Instances like Homelander examining his aging reflection and removing a gray hair are particularly important for understanding his character, and these scenes are so effective thanks to Antony Starr’s exceptional acting.
Homelander’s frustrating personality made his eventual defeat in The Boys finale so satisfying, but it was a payoff built over five seasons – a development that even impacted the spin-off series, Gen V. The sheer number of memes inspired by Homelander also proves how effectively Antony Starr portrayed the character, clearly connecting with viewers.
Homelander is easily one of the best TV villains of recent years, and while the writing is excellent, Antony Starr’s performance is a huge part of what makes the character so compelling. He deserves recognition for his work, especially considering he’s been a standout since the very beginning of The Boys.
Homelander Is An Iconic Villain, With Or Without An Emmy
Whether or not Antony Starr wins an Emmy, his portrayal of Homelander in The Boys has cemented the character as a truly memorable villain. Homelander is already considered one of the best villains in superhero stories, often compared to iconic figures like Heath Ledger’s Joker and Josh Brolin’s Thanos.
I know everyone has their own idea of the greatest villain from the last 25 years, but for me, Homelander definitely deserves to be in the conversation. It’s rare for a bad guy to stay so captivating for so long, and Antony Starr really made Homelander stand out. What’s even more interesting is the strange connection he created with the audience – it’s unlike anything I’ve seen before.
Despite his terrible actions, most fans both wanted Homelander to be held accountable and wanted to keep watching him because he was so entertaining. Even though the show has ended, his memorable moments will continue to circulate online through memes, so he’ll remain a presence on the internet for a long time.
I know so many incredibly talented actors, like Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes in The Walking Dead and Bob Odenkirk as Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad, who never won an Emmy despite giving truly iconic performances. So, while I’d love to see Starr recognized for his amazing work as Homelander, I can accept that it won’t be a disaster if he doesn’t get one. It’s just that Emmy snubs happen, even to the best!
His portrayal of the character in The Boys will undoubtedly be remembered for a long time. There’s even a possibility he could reappear in a future project through flashbacks. Either way, Homelander will stay a beloved villain and become a significant part of television history.
