Similarly to Charlize Theron in “Tully,” Adams’ character’s descent into unreality serves as a means of coping with the overwhelming burden of motherhood: She bonds with her support group (a cluster of fellow moms she once believed would never empathize with her) and unleashes years of repressed anger towards her unhelpful spouse.

The unique concept of the movie might entice people to cinemas this December, yet beneath its surface, “Nightbitch” is a thought-provoking analysis similar to “The Yellow Wallpaper,” exploring how certain situations and financial pressures can compel mothers to relinquish their careers to focus on childcare.
As a mom to a 14-year-old daughter named Aviana, Adams reflects on the difficult early days of parenthood, despite having support from her husband Darren Le Gallo and six siblings. She recalls that each moment required full attention for her child’s care. Although her relationship with Le Gallo was more balanced than in “Nightbitch,” it was still a struggle to be the first among her friends to become a mother. When “Nightbitch” debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival in September, it received mixed feedback from both critics and viewers – some deemed the narrative as confusing and overly dramatic, whereas others applauded it as a powerful feminist metaphor. This is not unexpected for Adams, considering that the book on which it’s based, Rachel Yoder’s novel “Nightbitch”, also garnered a polarized response, with readers either adoring or criticizing it intensely.
Adams comments, ‘This might provoke differing opinions. I guess you could say, ‘If you get it, you get it!’ This work explores themes like friendship, community, family, and parenthood. It touches upon many deep-rooted familial hurts. So if it resonates with you, that would bring me immense joy.
