America’s Next Top Model contestant Adrianne Curry makes shock allegation about Season 1 win

The Netflix documentary ‘Reality Check’ has brought renewed attention to ‘America’s Next Top Model,’ and sparked a resurgence of serious claims made by Adrianne Curry, the show’s first winner.

The new Netflix documentary, Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model, offers a behind-the-scenes look at the popular TV show.

Created by Tyra Banks in 2003 and originally aired on UPN, the show was a competition where aspiring models competed until only one winner remained.

A recent documentary has brought attention to harmful practices on America’s Next Top Model, including fat-shaming, body-shaming, and a problematic instance where contestants’ appearances were altered to change their racial identities. Additionally, a former contestant has come forward claiming she wasn’t properly compensated for her participation.

Adrianne Curry claims she didn’t receive America’s Next Top Model prize in full

Okay, so I just watched the first episode of this series called ‘Reality Check,’ and it’s all about the very first season of America’s Next Top Model – you know, the one where Adrianne Curry ended up winning! It was a deep dive into Cycle 1, and it was wild seeing how everything started.

When the season began, Tyra Banks explained to the contestants that the winner would receive a Revlon contract, a feature in Marie Claire magazine, and representation from the Wilhelmina modeling agency.

Curry claims the rewards she was promised never materialized. In a 2023 interview with Entertainment Weekly, she explained that her prize was simply having a makeup artist apply makeup to her face while a small group of about seven Revlon employees watched. She questioned why anyone would have fought so hard for such a disappointing outcome.

Curry said the gig paid just $15,000, and left her feeling “f*cking humiliated.”

The first season’s winner thinks switching from Wilhelmina to IMG Models in Season 2 ultimately hurt her career prospects.

I was shocked to hear this, but apparently some agents actually wanted me to fail! They were really direct about it, telling me so themselves. It turns out they were upset because ‘Top Model’ hadn’t followed through on promises they’d made to them.

Curry felt that Wilhelmina deliberately sabotaged her chances at getting cast in jobs, seemingly to damage the reputation of Banks and America’s Next Top Model. This led Curry to attempt to get out of her contract with the agency.

When contacted for comment, Wilhelmina’s former VP, Ray Lata, explained that the agency has changed significantly in the past 20 years. Now a public company, he believes it wouldn’t make sense for them to intentionally harm Tyra Banks or limit a model’s ability to earn money.

The popular reality show America’s Next Top Model will be back for its 25th season soon. Meanwhile, former winner Adrianne Curry is now a global representative for the beauty company Avon.

I just finished watching ‘Reality Check: Inside America’s Next Top Model’ on Netflix, and it was so interesting! If you’re into documentaries like I am, you might also want to check out the new one about Piper Rockelle. I’ve also been following the news about Lucy Letby and whether she’ll get another trial, and it’s wild to learn where Elizabeth Smart’s kidnapper is now. Lots of compelling stuff to watch!
