As a film enthusiast who has spent countless hours in the dimly lit corners of cinema theaters, I can confidently say that the upcoming 4K restoration and rerelease of Bob Clark’s “Black Christmas” is an event not to be missed. Having grown up on a steady diet of horror classics from the ’70s and ’80s, this film holds a special place in my heart.
To mark its 50th year, the American Genre Film Archive will be screening a restored 4K version of Bob Clark’s iconic holiday horror film “Black Christmas” on the big screen.
Collaborating with AGFA, the collectible company Mutant from Texas has designed a “Black Christmas” poster measuring 18 inches by 24 inches. This unique piece will only be accessible at specific screenings marking the 50th anniversary. The five-color print, manufactured by Night Swin in a limited run of 285, showcases fresh artwork from Phantom City Creative. On December 5th, additional white and red versions of this poster will go live on Mutant’s official website.
I’m deeply grateful that the American Genre Film Archive and Mutant are bringing the 50th Anniversary of ‘Black Christmas’ to movie theaters this year, as Olivia Hussey expressed about the rerelease. ‘The film industry is fortunate to have the AGFA,’ she said, ‘which consistently demonstrates the enduring significance of cinema by hosting events like this one. I’m overjoyed and honored that AGFA is making this classic film available to a new audience of movie enthusiasts.’
AGFA is thrilled to team up with Shout Studios and Mutant for the 50th anniversary of Bob Clark’s ‘Black Christmas’. This classic holiday horror movie will be returning to cinemas in stunning 4K quality. As we celebrate our own 15th anniversary this year, AGFA continues its commitment to safeguarding, celebrating, and championing remarkable genre films and their creators. We are grateful for the opportunity to work with outstanding partners to share these timeless movies with a new audience of film enthusiasts.
The movie will be shown at various North American theaters from December 7th to the 22nd. Among these participating venues are: Olympia Film Society in Olympia, Washington; Grand Illusion Cinema in Seattle; New Beverly Cinema and Vista Theater in Los Angeles; Brattle Theatre in Boston; Rivoli Theatre in La Crosse, Wisconsin; AFS Cinema in Austin, Texas; Denver Film in Denver, Colorado; Rubber Glove Studio in Denton, Texas; Cinema Moderne in Montreal, Quebec; Hollywood Theatre in Portland, Oregon; Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, California; Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline, Massachusetts; and Metro Cinema in Edmonton, Alberta.
It’s going to be fantastic to watch ‘Black Christmas’ in theaters this December, especially in stunning 4K quality,” said Mutant in a statement. “We’re thrilled to collaborate with AGFA and various renowned art house cinemas in the U.S. and Canada to release a captivating new silkscreen poster for the classic holiday slasher. With a film as iconic (and Canadian) as ‘Black Christmas’, there’s no one more fitting to create the artwork than Toronto-based Phantom City Creative.
First released in 1974, “Black Christmas” tells a chilling story of a sorority house inhabited by a group of women who receive unsettling phone calls with growing menace. This film is one of two holiday masterpieces directed by Bob Clark, the other being “A Christmas Story.” The cast includes Olivia Hussey, Keir Dullea, Margot Kidder, John Saxon, and Marian Waldman.
