AMC+’s Mark Ruffalo-Produced ‘Lakota Nation vs. United States’ Lands Top Prize at Documentary Emmys

As a film enthusiast with over two decades of experience under my belt, I must say that these nominations and winners truly showcase the diversity and creativity in documentary storytelling today. From the heart-wrenching tales of World War II to the fascinating journeys of incredible animals, each production offers a unique perspective on our world.

At the documentary section of the News & Documentary Emmys on Thursday, AMC+’s “Lakota Nation vs. United States” won two prestigious awards – best documentary and outstanding direction in a documentary. The film was skillfully directed by Jesse Short Bull and Laura Tomaselli, and executive produced by Mark Ruffalo.

Additionally, Netflix had a successful evening, bagging a total of six awards – more than any other network or streaming platform. Among the awards were two for “World War II: From the Front Lines,” along with wins for “Victim/Suspect,” “American Manhunt: The Boston Marathon Bombing,” “Big Vape: The Rise and Fall of Juul,” and “Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food.

On the award night, only three titles stood out as multiple Emmy recipients: “Lakota Nation vs. United States”, “World War II: From the Front Lines” and “PBS’s Frontline”. The victories of PBS were divided between two for “Frontline”, one for “POV” and another for “Independent Lens”.

Meanwhile, National Geographic was a standout at the News & Documentary Emmys held on Wednesday. They won the most awards after Netflix, with a total of five. Their winning titles included “Science Fair: The Series”, “Path of the Panther”, “Nazis at Nuremberg: The Lost Testimony”, “Incredible Animal Journeys” and “JFK: One Day in America”.

At the event held last Thursday, I had the pleasure of witnessing Alex Gibney, an esteemed documentarian and director, receiving a well-deserved lifetime achievement award. The evening was skillfully orchestrated by none other than W. Kamau Bell, a multiple Emmy and Peabody Award-winning stand-up comedian who served as our host for the 45th Annual Documentary Emmy Awards.

On Wednesday evening, I was thrilled to witness CNN taking the lead with an impressive 11 awards in the news segment of the two-night event. Five of these victories were secured by “The Whole Story with Anderson Cooper.” ABC and National Geographic both claimed five wins each. Interestingly, ABC News accumulated a total of eight awards, with three credited to Hulu. The Nat Geo series “Trafficked with Mariana van Zeller” also shone brightly, earning an equal number of Emmys as Cooper’s wins, making them the joint champions for the night. Lastly, the esteemed broadcast journalist and author, Jane Pauley, was honored with a Lifetime Achievement award during this news-centric ceremony. She is currently the host of “CBS News Sunday Morning.

The 45th News & Documentary Emmy Awards, organized by the National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences in New York City, unfolded across two evenings (September 25 and 26) at the Palladium Times Square in New York. The event was streamed on NATAS’ viewing app.

According to EbMaster’s Addie Morfoot, the book “Lakota Nation vs. United States” tells the longstanding story of the Lakota Indians’ fight to recover the Black Hills in South Dakota, a sacred land that was unjustly taken from them by the U.S. government as early as 1876.

The two-hour documentary is structured into three parts: extermination, assimilation, and reparations, and it’s narrated from the perspective of the Lakota people. It details how the Black Hills were illegally seized in breach of numerous treaty obligations, while simultaneously exploiting and relocating the original inhabitants. The film also delves into the ongoing struggle to regain ownership of the Black Hills, as well as examining the numerous instances where the U.S. has neglected, overlooked, or failed to address the historical injustices inflicted upon Indigenous communities nationwide.
